ARABIC LANGUAGE EDITOR (FREELANCE)

Arabic Language Editor

As part of its overall communications strategy, the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office is keen to increase its origination of outputs in the Arabic language. We are therefore now seeking an Arabic Language editor to assist with copy-edited short-form outputs in Arabic and originated short-form outputs in Arabic.

During the initial three-month period, the Amnesty International’s Language Resource Centre will provide induction on the Arabic glossary and house style manual and sample-check the quality of the Arabic language in order to ensure that it matches the style of other Arabic outputs produced.

Tasks for the consultant, would include the following:

• Carry out the following occasional tasks when requested within a defined timeframe
• Copy-edit in Arabic short-to-medium-form outputs (including media outputs and commentary pieces such as blogs) produced by staff who write in Arabic
• Originate reactive short-form outputs (such as quotes) in Arabic on the basis of bullet points in English.
• In all cases, ensure that the outputs meet high editorial standards in Arabic, conform to Amnesty International’s house style and employ appropriate terminology (using glossaries provided).
• In the case of outputs intended for media audiences, ensure that the Arabic language used is of a style and register that will be attractive to them.

Consultancy duration:

• An initial three-month contract with weekly hours not exceeding 15 per week.

​Person specifications

• An advanced academic degree (Masters) in Arabic Language, Linguistics, Translation, Journalism (or equivalent)
• Solid and provable experience as a senior Arabic Language editor
• Excellent drafting and editing skills in Arabi
• Experience of writing and/or editing media outputs in Arabic
• Understanding of professional editorial quality standards and experience of implementing them
• Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality
• Strong communications skills
• Excellent level of IT literacy and fluency with Office software application
• Understanding and knowledge of human rights standards and issues, particularly ones in the Middle East and North Africa region
• Flexibility to respond to ad hoc requests and to work different hours each week and at irregular hours of the day
• Capacity to work effectively under minimal supervision
• Strong teamwork skills and constructive attitude

Remuneration:

The proposed hourly pay rate for Consultancy is on a per hour basis, please confirm your rates in your application. This position is advertised on a freelance basis and will not result in an employment contract.
