Location: Bar Elias, Central Bekaa

Dates: Spring Semester March 12th, 2018 – June 2018

Teaching Hours: One class per week (4 hours teaching) for a total of 16 days per semester (64 hours) Days of week and time TBD

 

Key areas of Responsibility

  • Deliver one class of English Language instruction per week from March – June to a section of up to 25 students
  • Assigning and grading exercises
  • Giving feedback and communicating effectively with students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Delivering the material in a technology-enhanced format utilizing online materials prepared specifically for the program
  • Reviewing the curriculum and updating it as per needs of the class or the training
  • Coordinating with AUB faculty supervisor and other section instructor
  • Reporting as required
  • Participating in occasional training and evaluation sessions

 

Key Characteristics and Qualifications

  • Experience teaching English in a high school (grade 12), university, or training institute (experience teaching students from underprivileged communities would be an added advantage)
  • Relevant academic degree
  • Skilled in engaging learners with diverse previous educational experience utilizing student-centered learning techniques
  • Passionate about working with young people and disadvantaged communities
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is essential
  • Good facilitation and time management skills
  • Strong skills in basic computer applications, previous experience using online resources and technology in the classroom is a plus

Background: The Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) is implementing a blended college-readiness program that prepares Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese youth for entry into higher education. This eight-month program will provide foundational academic course work in English, Math, Science, and Digital Skills. This project is funded by UK aid from the British people through SPHEIR (Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education Innovation and Reform) in partnership with King’s College London, Al Al Bayt University (Jordan), Kiron Open Higher Education (Germany), and FutureLearn (UK).
