Main purpose:
Organize and carry out surgery activities, ensure pre and post-operative surgical care, in accordance with MSF hospital policies, protocols and universal hygiene standards and in close collaboration with medical staff in the wards and operation theatre in order to improve patients’ health conditions.
Accountabilities:
- Implement the MSF hospital clinical policies, tools, guidelines and protocols (antibiotic prophylaxis, post-operative pain management, thrombo-prophylaxis, blood transfusion, etc.) and make recommendations (standard hygiene and sterilization rules, prevention to HIV, TB, Syphilis and Hep B exposure) in order to minimize clinical risks.
- Perform pre-operative consultations, evaluating the surgical risks with the anesthesiologist and/or other medical staff involved, and obtaining the patient’s signed consent to operate.
- Carry out programed (and emergency) surgical intervention following the MSF hospital protocols and policies including participating in swab counts, ensuring appropriate use of surgical equipment and proper Operating Theatre (OT) registry entry/documentation of all OT intervention.
- Carry out post-operative clinical care and ward rounds collaborating with the anesthesiologist, the Operating Theatre Nurse and ward staff or other department heads to ensure compliance with MSF hospital protocols and rational use of medicines. Attend to the emergency room when required.
- In collaboration with the anesthesiologist, carry-out the collection and analysis of quantitative surgical- anesthesia data, using post-operative observation sheets, routine data collected, patient files, operating department register, patient file, etc. to monitor quality. Monthly review of data and analyze clinical trends and comment on adverse events / poor clinical outcome.
- Support organizing the operating program and with OT staff monitor use of material and equipment and advise on instrument needs and coordinates patient referral.
- Participate in all organized departmental meetings such as infection control committee meetings, Mortality meetings etc.
- Knows and helps implement the accidental blood exposure policy.
- Support the team with bedside trainings (emergency and the out-patient teams) in order to ensure the amount of knowledge required to improve people diagnosing, triage, and early detection capabilities.
- Support other medical teams/wards when needed (i.e. OPD, ER etc.)
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Essential Medical Doctor with diploma in general surgical specialty
- Licensed by the Ministry of Public Health of Lebanon and registered at the Order
Experience
- Surgical experience in Wound management techniques (Skin grafting, skin plasty techniques), herniorrhaphy, hemorrhoid surgery, anal surgery, laparotomy and orthopedic surgery.
- Previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s in developing countries is an asset
Languages
- Fluency in Arabic is and English is Mandatory
