GIS Officer

GVC is an Italian NGO founded in 1971 and is currently working in 22 countries worldwide. GVC presence in Lebanon dates back to the start of the Syrian Crisis and since then GVC has been implementing emergency and development projects in Bekaa financed by International Donors mainly in Emergency Response.

GVC is actually recruiting personnel to cover the position of GIS Officer to support activities in Bekaa

OBJECTIVES:

The activities of GVC in the north of the Bekaa are mainly focused on Emergency Response (WASH and Shelter) and implementation of the Community Protection Approach (CPA). The CPA is a methodology which comprises a context-specific process of multi-sectorial assessment and right-based analysis to determine immediate patterns of risks and analyze the degree of the population’s resilience against such risks.

The GIS Officer will be responsible to support the mission in the design of maps using GIS software to support the design and implementation of activities mainly related to ECHO funded project.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Preparation, conception and production of maps

• • Identify map information needs;
  • Identify and access map information sources;
  • Ensure accurate linkages between spatial databases and assessment data;
  • Generate maps as a working & communication tool, in timely and accurate manner;
  • Ensure that the produced maps meet the requirements of the Project

2. Supervision and monitoring of mapping related data collection

• • Conceptualize methodologies for collecting data in the field, as according to need;
  • Organize and supervise GIS field missions;
  • Monitor accuracy of data collected;
  • Cross check data collected in the field, ensure regular updates and solve eventual discrepancies.

Any other task not here listed and necessary to the projects and activities

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor degree in Geography/GIS or a related discipline;
• 1 year of experience in GIS / Database management, preferably in humanitarian context;
• Good command of GIS software (especially QGIS Desktop), general computer software (Excel, Word)
• Previous experience with mobile data collection (ODK, ONA, KOBO);
•  Driving licence (at least 2 years)

• Knowledge of Arabic and fluency in written and spoken English (mandatory)
• Patience to handle repetitive task
• Good communication skills (with local authorities and communities)
• Understanding of and commitment to humanitarian principles and values
• Highly organised and able to work respecting deadlines
• Ability to work in team
• Being flexible and with the ability to adjust to changes and new requirements
• Able to prioritise work effectively for execution with limited resources
• Be exceptionally detail oriented and technically minded

EMPLOYEMENT CONDITIONS

• Contract duration: 4 months full-time with possibility to renew depending on funding with 3 months’ probation period;
• Required Starting Date: 15th December 2018
• Duty Station: Based in Zahle (GVC office) with daily field activities in target areas in Baalbek – Hermel governorate, including Masharia Al-Qaa.
