Call for Mentors

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) together with the education partners and the American Lebanese Language Center (ALLC) are launching a Foreign Language Group (FLG) support program. The program aims to increase levels of foreign language skills among refugee children and youth, through a community-based approach. The project will target enrolled refugee children and youth from grade 4 to 9, supporting them to gain a level of foreign language knowledge that will help retain them in school.  Mentors from Lebanese universities (public and private) are encouraged to apply to facilitate the language support sessions.

Mentor requirements

  • Proficiency in English or French - Minimum level: High B1/B2 (only candidates, who pass the English or French language proficiency test conducted by ALLC, will be selected as FLG Mentors)
  • Good communication skills
  • High level of motivation, dedication & reliability
  • Interest in Community Service

Mentors roles & responsibilities

  • Deliver a 99 hour curriculum to refugee students in community venues such as refugee houses, tented settlements, community or social development centers (approx. start of FLGs: 2nd week of June 2019)
  • Learning activities will take place 2-3 times per week for 3 hours per day for a period of 4 months
  • Participate in a 5-day training before starting content delivery
  • Maintain attendance records for the students enrolled in the program
  • Report any drop-outs from the program to the Foreign Language Group coordinator
  • Identify Child Protection cases if they occur and report them to UNHCR partners
  • Communicate regularly with the Foreign Language Group coordinator in the field
  • Report to UNHCR partners on impact of the program on students in the schools
  • Provide a feedback and evaluation of the program and content

The mentors will receive a training prior to the roll out of the classes that will focus on language awareness, teaching methodology and creating a child-friendly and positive learning environment in addition to child protection themes. The mentors will receive an incentive of USD 200.00 per month to cover for the transportation and communication expenses.

At the end of the project, a certificate of English/French teaching hours will be provided to each of the mentors who participated in the project.
