WASH INTERN

REGIONAL CONTEXT

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is affected by some of the protracted and complex humanitarian emergencies in the world, primarily the result of armed conflict and other protracted violence.  The long occupation of Palestine and the conflicts in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen have in recent years led to large-scale humanitarian crises and remain a major determining factor in the ability of communities to take active steps towards strengthening their resilience.  Health and Care lead the WASH efforts both in emergency and developmental efforts and strategically and operationally WASH and Health and Care are seen as indivisible and complementary and form the Health and WASH Unit structurally.

GLOBAL CONTEXT

Other IFRC Regions and the HQ in Geneva have a network of WASH staff and programming worldwide and one component of these programmes is a new initiative ‘One WASH’ which is established to enable NS’s to deliver larger scale, long term projects to contribute to the better control, response to and elimination of cholera by 2030, this in alignment with the Global Task Force for Cholera Control (GTFCC) ‘cholera roadmap’ led by WHO.

OBJECTIVE

 

The internship will provide an opportunity for graduate students or after graduated to work with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s humanitarian and health-related work in MENA and Globally focusing upon ‘One WASH’ primarily but supporting the whole team in MENA and Globally where appropriate under the supervision of the WASH Regional Advisor/Senior Officer and ultimately to Head of Health & Care and Emergency health coordinator.

The intern will benefit from access to all Federation tools related to WASH and health response in humanitarian emergencies as well as WASH and health in development.

MAIN TASKS

- Support the WASH and Health and Care team in developing further ‘One WASH’.

- Assist in the logistics and technical preparations related to ‘One WASH’ and other Health operations and programmes.

- Assist the WASH and Health and Care team in their daily tasks of technical support to National Societies engaging with ‘One WASH’.

- Conduct missions if there are any appropriate possibilities (subject to security clearance).

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES

  • General admin, logistical and financial management related health and wash department with main focus on ‘One WASH’
  • Maintain key files and data on ‘One WASH’,
  • Maintain links and assist in coordination related to health and wash department focus on ‘One WASH’ partners both internal and external.
  • Support preparation of key documents, publications and marketing information on ‘One WASH’.
