CIL is currently is implementing this pilot project that addresses a key turning point in girls’ pathway to education in North Lebanon – the transition from intermediate to secondary school. Data clearly shows that only 57% of Lebanese girls, and a mere 3% of Syrian girls, are currently registered in secondary education.

During the transition from intermediate to secondary school, girls are dropping out, losing vital peer support networks and missing out on key skills development at a critical moment in their lives. This limits their future ability to obtain higher paying, quality jobs and to engage in self-employment beyond informal markets. When a girl gets an education, she develops crucial problem-solving skills, enabling her to make better decisions and choices, and she builds the skills and knowledge needed to live a healthy, fulfilling life in which she can contribute to her family and community. An educated girl is also much less likely to become a child bride.

By using the Positive Deviance approach, the project aims to obtain valuable insights into why a small group of girls have advanced to secondary education. These learnings will allow other group of girls, not in school or at risk of dropping out, to explore which approaches effectively create and secure pathways into secondary education.

By implementing the four phases of the project, the Positive Deviant girls, equipped with needed knowledge and skills, will become the change-makers who will influence their own communities and serve as mentors for other girls at risk of leaving school.

INVOLVING HIGH SCHOOLS

By identifying all factors that influence girls’ education, it is fundamental to engage both family, community as well as school. Therefore, CARE is cooperating and coordinating with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) upon an official permit obtained from the ministry to operate in the public high schools of Tripoli. Till the day, five public high schools are involved in the process and are providing valuable insights for the project. The work will proceed with MEHE and the schools in order to secure a sustainable impact and a better atmosphere for the girls to succeed and graduate.

THE RESEARCH

The data collected during implementation of activities in phase I will be analyzed by the American University of Beirut (AUB) to discover the uncommon but successful behaviors and strategies used by the PD girls. Based on the data, a shared research paper will be published and disseminated to stakeholders as well as presented at a regional seminar held in the last phase of the project.
