Art-based facilitator

  1. Context:

Within the frame of the its Psychosocial Support Program, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is establishing a new Recreational and Counselling Centre for Families in Tripoli. Under the direct supervision of IOM PSS National Officer and the overall supervision of the PSS Program Manager, in coordination with the Emergency Response and Stabilization Coordinator, the art-based facilitator shall operate as member of a multidisciplinary psychosocial support team alongside a team leader, a social worker, a psychologist, an educator and outreach volunteers.

  1. Tasks and responsibilities:

The art-based facilitator shall use art (visual, performative, applied, etc.) and cultural resources as a media to enhance psychosocial wellbeing of targeted communities, and promote education, social cohesion, community engagement, awareness, advocacy, etc.

In particular, the art-based facilitator should assume the following responsibilities:

  • Map existing needs and contribute to psychosocial needs assessments;
  • Mobilize creative resources available within the communities and support the organization and implementation within the Centre of community-generated activities, such as like, hosting art troupes, exhibitions, workshops, cultural events, etc.;
  • Assisting, developing and conducting age-appropriate community-based activities focused on creative and art-mediation techniques, as well as cultural and sports activities such as: interactive theatre, photography, puppetry, music activities, community storytelling, readings, film screening, etc.;
  • Support and empower community members, in particular artists, to become agent of change within their communities and to disseminate key awareness messages on psychosocial wellbeing, health, education, protection, human rights, etc.;
  • Support the implementation of focused PSS activities, including art-based therapies such as dramatherapy, music therapy, creative writing, movement and dance therapies, etc.
  • Support and organize social campaign, artistic productions and community events;
  • Encouraging communication and cultural networking among artists and art practitioners through the Centre;
  • Promoting the active participation of displaced and local communities to the Centre’s activities, by providing information about the services, support and advocacy, ensuring proper attention to specific emotional and physical needs;
  • Assist the Centre in the developing or reviewing methodologies and toolkits for PSS activities;
  • Provide technical support, training and assistance to the SDCs network to strengthen their provision of PSS services;
  • Contribute to safe identification and referral of cases that require specific interventions;
  • Attend and participate to training and capacity building activities organized by IOM and by other national and internationally partners;
  • Ensure that the activities are done in a clean, safe, quiet and comfortable environment;
  • Adopt a non-discriminatory as well as age and gender-sensitive appropriate approach with all people participating to the activities;
  • Ensure that participants are aware of IOM accountability/complaint mechanisms;
  • Perform any other relevant duty as may be assigned.

Administrative tasks

  • Develop a weekly and monthly schedule of activities and contribute to the definition of the Centre’s activity program;
  • Collect attendance of participants in the activities, and fill in weekly reports on the sessions conducted, case referral and follow up, visits, etc. as required;
  • Develop individual and group progress report and maintain a filing system of participants respecting confidentiality;
  • Collect and document feedback on the implementation of the activities including challenges and lessons learnt;
  • Plan and identify materials and any kind of support required in the interventions on monthly basis;
  • Respect and abide to IOM internal code of conduct;
  • Perform any other relevant duty as may be assigned.
  1. Requirements
    1. Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Theatre, Psychology, Anthropology, or any other relevant field;
  • Post-graduate studies in psychosocial animation, in post-emergency settings, psychosocial support and dialogue, theatre or cultural animation, etc.
  • Previous experiences in art-mediation psychosocial support activities in emergencies.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills;  
  • Dynamism and initiative;
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity;  
  • Excellent knowledge of the local context;
  • Knowledge of psychosocial guidelines and approaches related to emergency settings (MHPSS IASC guidelines, PFA guidelines, etc.);
  • Familiarity with validated psychosocial support methodologies and tools in Lebanon;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds;  
  • Ability to draft clearly and concisely;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to effectively assess psychosocial needs and support persons in crisis;
  • Ability to identify and mobilize resources in the person/family/community;
  • Personal commitment, efficiency, flexibility and drive for results;  
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word and Excel.
