Education Assistant - North

ROLE PURPOSE:

As a member of the Education in Emergencies team, and under the supervision of the Education Officer, the Education Assistant will be responsible for implementing the Education in Emergencies programme interventions for affected communities. The Education Assistant will work towards ensuring the programme is of a high technical quality, monitoring processes are in place, that timely reporting occurs, and that the programme is continually assessed and solutions quickly put in place for a change of context.

 

CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

Level 3 – the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people.

 

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Education Officer

Reporting to: No direct reports although this staff will be a focal point between the programme and implementing communities. The Education Assistant is expected to implement and monitor education activities in allocated sites on a regular basis.

 

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

- Under the supervision and support of the Education Officer, facilitate the implementation of the Education in Emergencies programme particularly the non-formal education, work closely with parents and communities, ensure smooth interaction between SCI Education team, beneficiaries, communities, and provide technical support as needed.

- Contribute to the ongoing field assessments and data collection as required.

- In collaboration with the Education team, contribute to establishing and implementing operational work plans, setting clear targets and activity plans for communities and programme sites.

- Clearly communicate the targets, programme objectives and activity plans to community focal points, parents and children.

- Liaise on a daily basis with communities and SCI supervisors and colleagues to guarantee smooth implementation of the programme.

- Work directly in the field with children, educators, facilitators, communities, parents, and other stakeholders of the programme locations.

- Provide information and advice to beneficiaries (parents and children) on existing formal and non-formal education opportunities, social and protection services, and refer them to relevant services as required.

- Assist in the organisation and implementation of awareness sessions for children, adolescents, parents and communities at large.

- Plan, coordinate and facilitate the distribution of teaching and learning materials.

- Actively participate in capacity building initiatives when relevant, and assist in the organisation and implementation of trainings and workshops.

- Lead on community outreach activities and effectively assist in the organisation and implementation of trainings, workshops, and conduct focus group discussions and participatory assessments with children and parents.

- Collect and report information regarding the overall situation of the Syrian refugee children and their families in the community, with specific attention paid to the out-of-school children and programme objectives, and report any implementation challenges to direct supervisor.

- Ensure a strict adherence to the principles of Child Protection at all times, including respect for confidentiality.

- Apply a child centred approach and act in the best interest of the child.

Monitoring and Evaluation

- Participate in regular monitoring and evaluation activities of the Education programme.

- Produce internal timely reports on the activities in each site, highlighting challenges, best practices and lessons learnt.

- Ensure that data is accurately collected and reported on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

- Visit project sites on a daily basis to ensure that the facilitators, volunteers, and the community at large are appropriately supported and that qualitative and quantitative programme objectives are achieved.

 Adherence to Save the Children policies and procedures

- Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to Child Protection, Code of Conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

- In agreement with the line manager, perform other duties within reason (in line with the skills and experience).

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES:

- At least two years’ experience in education, preferably in an (I) NGO environment or educational setting

- Prior teaching experience is an asset

- Bachelor degree in Education, Development / Humanitarian Studies, or Social Science

- Understanding of national development issues, in particular in relation to children and education, and government institutions, and public schools

- Ability to analyse information, evaluate options and to plan strategically

- Strength in interpersonal, communication and presentation skills

- Fluency in written and spoken Arabic, good written and spoken English. French is an asset

- Flexibility and willingness to change work practices and hours and capability to work in insecure volatile environment

- Commitment  to  and  understanding  of  Save  the  Children’s  aims,  values  and principles  including rights-based approaches

- Familiarity with T5 and Akkar regions is an asset.

 

Note that this post is based in Kouwaykhat (Akkar) with frequent daily field visits to Education sites all over the North (T5 and Akkar).
