Background
War Child (WCH) is an independent and impartial international non-governmental organization investing in a peaceful future for children and young people affected by armed conflict.
WCH strives to empower children and young people, while enabling adults to bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of conflict-affected children and young people.
The Research and Development Department at WCH has developed a multi-year research agenda that combines work towards evidence-based, socio-ecological, integrated and multi-level care services with validated quality implementation standards.
WCH is working on a new study (funded by AHRC-FDCO) to develop and test a contextually and culturally sensitive family systemic module that can be delivered alongside the existing United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Focused-Psychosocial Support (FPSS) program for at-risk adolescents in Lebanon. Teams at War Child Holland and American University of Beirut are co-leading development and evaluation the module, along with 2 other implementing partners (Danish Refugee Council and Terre Des Hommes Italy), and other academic partners, Global Health Institute, UNICEF Lebanon and the National Mental Health Programme Lebanon. WCH will be an implementing partner, and also responsible for overseeing training and supervision in the new intervention.
Purpose of the Family-focussed intervention Research Study
Currently we are in the pilot process of the study in which we want to make sure that the systemic family intervention module is acceptable and feasible for at-risk young people and their caregivers in Lebanon. During the pilot phase just the family module will be implemented.
Based on the pilot outcomes we will implement the full RCT phase of the project to assess if the combination of the systemic family intervention module plus the UNICEF FPSS child modules are effective in improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people and their families compared to the FPSS child modules alone.
The family module will be comprised of approximately 7 family sessions for young adolescents and their caregivers, including evidence based techniques: Emotional regulation
Communication & Problem Solving Skills.
The full Randomised Control Trial (full RCT) will take place in year 2 of the research study and the family module will be implemented alongside the existing UNICEF Focussed-Psychosocial Support curriculum for at risk adolescents in Lebanon and the study will test if the combination of the systemic intervention module plus the UNICEF FPSS child modules are effective in improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people, and their families, compared to the FPSS child modules alone, and what factors contribute to a successful intervention.
