Infant and Young Child Feeding Monitor (Midwife/Nurse) - Zahle

Infant and young child feeding practices are one of the basic pillars in ensuring nutrition status of young infants is protected, especially for infants under 6 months of age until the age of 2. Under the supervision of the FSL-NUT supervisor, the IYCF Monitor will be receiving and monitoring the IYCF-related calls and referrals, supporting the national IYCF hotline. The IYCF Monitor, therefore, will receive phone calls from beneficiaries and refer them to the relevant actors, including IYCF specialists and/or other referrals, in order to improve their child and self-care skills and improve their quality of life. The IYCF Monitor will be linked to the team managing and leading the national IYCF hotline, managed by IOCC, supported by UNICEF and led by the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon.

Objective 1: Receive calls from pregnant women and caregivers of children under 2 through national IYCF hotline and provide assistance (40%)

  • Receive the calls through the national IYCF hotline from caregivers of children under 2
  • Assess mothers/caregivers and their children to identify specific feeding support needs, using rapid assessments and questionnaires
  • Provide needed assistance to the targeted beneficiaries on IYCF as first step of support (in addition to tasks under objective 2 as needed)

Objective 2: Make referrals expressed by caregivers and pregnant women to needed services and follow-up on support (35%)

  • Specify route of support through referrals based on expressed and prepare the service note on health, MHPSS, nutrition, FSL, etc. services provided
  • Make necessary and timely referrals internally and/or externally to specialized agencies, respecting confidentialityLink caregivers to the relevant service providers (including IYCF/lactation specialist, safe artificial feeding support if available, nearest primary health care center, etc.) through a standardized referral mechanism
  • Coordinate referrals with other sectors based on needs (such as cash assistance, food parcels, etc.) including different sectors such as nutrition, food security sector, health, MHPSS, WASH, basic assistance – depending on expressed needs

Objective 3: Document and report on all activities conducted on a daily and weekly basis details on target, progress, referrals, challenges, and needs (25%)

  • Register and record all relevant data and steps taken regarding the beneficiaries and the referrals conducted, keeping detailed track of the needed services expressed and referral follow-up needs
  • Properly follow up on the cases referred to ensure proper support provided, internally and externally (other sectors, other organizations, etc.) with closure/end result for each case
  • Report and raise major challenges and concerns related to the referrals, to the NUT-FSL Supervisor and IYCF Coordinator
  • Provide verbal and written report, on a daily and weekly basis, on all activities, including type of support provided, targets reached, progress at work, follow-ups conducted, referrals made, challenges faced, lessons learned and needs

Objective 4: Security

  • Respect the security rules specified in the mission and base security plan and comply with the security plan and perform the security management tasks that can be assigned in its protocols.
  • Communicate to the security managers of the working location any security related information or noncompliance with the security plan

Objective 5: Support humanitarian activities of Action Against Hunger

  • Support the emergency interventions of the organization as per the employee’s abilities
  • Support any activity that helps reaching our humanitarian goals, as per the employee’s abilities
  • Promote gender equality within the humanitarian and/or development work
  • Attend meetings and trainings as needed

Training/ Education:

BS in nursing, midwifery, nutrition, or related medical field

Technical specific knowledge:

Extensive knowledge on Infant and Young Child Feeding practices and guidelines; knowledge on IYCF in emergencies is a plus

Previous experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in supporting/counseling on maternal and/or child health, with experience in reporting.
  • Being a Lactation/Infant and Young Child Feeding Specialist is a plus.

Humanitarian sector knowledge:

NGO experience is a plus, experience in working vulnerable communities, including Syrian refugees and host communities, is desirable

Languages:

Native Arabic speaker and fluency in English are a must
