Research Consultant

BACKGROUND:

The Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) is a local non-profit, non-partisan Lebanese human rights organization based in Beirut. CLDH was created in 2006 by the Franco-Lebanese Movement SOLIDA (Support for Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily), which has been active since 1996 in the struggle against arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance and the impunity of those perpetrating gross human rights violations.

CLDH monitors the human rights situation in Lebanon, fights enforced disappearance, impunity, arbitrary detention and racism and rehabilitates the victims of torture. CLDH regularly organizes press conferences, workshops and advocacy meetings on human rights issues in Lebanon and collects, records and documents human rights abuses in reports and press releases.

CLDH team on the ground supports initiatives aimed at determining the fate of all missing persons in Lebanon.

CLDH regularly follows up on numerous cases of arbitrary detention and torture in Lebanon in coordination with Lebanese and international organizations, and with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention WGAD and the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture.

As of August 2020, the Lebanese Center for Human Rights is involved in a one-year emergency response plan. CLDH aims to assist those who have been affected by the Beirut blast on several aspects by providing the following pro-bono services: legal aid and consultations, medical assistance, psycho-social support and cash assistance.

The Researcher Consultant will be working closely with CLDH Research and M&E Officer on ongoing studies under the supervision of the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-Supervise ongoing research activities at CLDH

-Set an action plan for different research studies

-Contribute to the development of CLDH’s Research Reports on Human Rights

-Assist in writing reports and delivering presentations when required

-Train other CLDH members on research tools, when necessary

-Coordinate with CLDH team members about research

Research Methodology:

CLDH usually  follows a mixed method approach in research activities.

It is drawn on the following sources:

-Desk study review: Review of online relevant sources of data to complete the assessment.

-Key informant interviews: Interviews will be conducted to gather in depth information from key stakeholders

-Surveys: Surveys should be distributed to wider members of the community.

Duration:The duration of the assignment is of 6 months and is expected to be done by December 15th, 2021.Qualifications:
  • Previous research experience on Social and Human Rights topics
  • Good communication skills and team player
  • Organization and time management skills
  • Ability to conduct trainings for team members and others
  • Fluency in Arabic and English languages. French is an asset

Education:

Completion of Masters degree in Law, Political Sciences, Humanitarian Studies or other related fields.

Location:

The Consultant can work remotely with regular meetings and visits to CLDH main office when needed.

Consultant will be paid on a monthly basis. Withholding tax of 7.5% will be deducted from each payment IF consultant does not have an MOF number.
