Accountant

FHI 360 seeks qualified candidates to serve as Accountant for the Lebanon Civic Action Accelerator Program, a five-year civil society strengthening program funded by USAID and implemented by FHI 360. The project will support a broad swath of civil society actors, building on prior civil society assistance accomplishments. Planned assistance interventions under this activity will increase the role of beneficiaries in shaping public policy (related to governance, human rights, protection of environment, and others); improve service provision; enhance the technical and administrative capacities of beneficiary organizations; and advance strategic collective action to advance rights and impact public policy.   

Job summary: 

The accountant will report to the Finance Manager and will be responsible for finance, legal, compliance, and audit activities. She/he will perform accounting functions and conduct the theory and practice of recording, classifying, examining and analyzing data and records of financial transactions. The accountant will process and record journal entries, cash receipts/field cash management and wire payments, respond to inquiries and assist in trainings, and maintain general ledger accounts and supporting sub-ledgers and produces various accounting reports.  

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct day-to-day accounting operations, including bookkeeping, processing payments, budget monitoring, financial reporting and support. 
  • Apply accounting principles and practice to a limited range of accounting, budgeting, forecasting, weekly cash flow, cost accounting and/or other fiscal functions. 
  • Review Country Office monthly financial reports for month end closings involving cash and travel reconciliations, accuracy of reports, and cost allowances. 
  • Assist in various financial analysis projects and closure of accounting records 
  • Review inter-department cash requests and journal entries 
  • Assume responsibility for the financial aspects of local procurement, including payment processing, financial tracking, monitoring, etc., in accordance with project financial procedures 
  • Review and analyze supplier and subcontractor coupons for accuracy and compliance with client and FHI 360 invoicing requirements
  • Support the review of sub-recipient/grant financial reports for accuracy and completeness and regularly monitor their budgets with the financial reports 
  • Support the review of sub-recipient/grant funds requests for accuracy and completeness and process payments/reimbursements as appropriate 
  • Support sub-grantee expenditures, making sure they are allowable, allocable, and reasonable according to the approved budgets in grant agreement 
  • Maintain records soft and hard copies for the project as required per the FHI 360 quality policy and systems
  • Assist in the preparation of salaries, and preparation of tax statements
  • Ensure all bank reconciliations are carried out monthly and in line with the month-end schedule
  • Review petty cash reports for accuracy and compliance. 
  • Assist with internal and external audit request
  • Work may include reconciliation of accounts or reports, examination of various financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to guidelines, and maintenance of subsidiary ledgers. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent in Accounting, Business, Finance or a related field 
  • 1-3 years of experience in maintaining ledger accounts and in ensuring compliance with company’s system of internal controls is required 
  • Computerized accounting software experience and proficiency in spreadsheet software required 
  • Articulate and professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive fashion  
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English and Arabic 
  • Prior work experience in an international organization or non-governmental organization (NGO) preferred 
  • Must be authorized to work in Lebanon
