World Learning:  Literacy Program Officer

 

Background

The UNICEF-funded” School Bridging Program” a school-based bridging program aims to create for out-of-school children’s multiple pathways that are flexible and responsive to each child’s unique learning needs. The program will be implemented in 20 private schools and is estimated to target 5,000 out of school children.

World Learning has an immediate vacancy for its Beirut-based “SBD Literacy Program Officer” for the UNICEF “School Bridging Program”. This position is for a Lebanese national.

 

Scope and Responsibilities

The SBD Literacy Program Officer will work closely and report to and assist the World Learning’s Beirut office Senior Literacy Technical Director in all literacy activities in three languages targeting mainly Arabic and both French and English. The activities are related to School bridging program focused on non-formal primary school education in Arabic, English or French. S/he will be able to:

 

  • Acquire deep understandings of the literacy in-class support program theoretical framework and pedagogy (Holistic Learning Approach and Balance Literacy Approach)
  • Commit to understanding out -of- school children profile and keep abreast of the latest research- based principles of learning that are most convenient for them, especially those who are emergent readers and writers
  • Modify curriculum objectives and accelerate learning within a differentiate classroom for two or more reading levels (Emergent and intermediate)
  • Deliver capacity building sessions (for teachers and other adults) and motivate participants to understand and apply the HLA/BLA approach
  • Work with distance learning and web conferencing to support teachers and meet on a regular basis
  • Contribute to the development of training materials
  • Contribute to coaching and supporting teachers, during recurring project activities 
  • Visit schools’ areas across the country as frequently as needed and document to show evidence/progress of implementation
  • Perform additional tasks as needed and requested by Senior Literacy Technical Director or Senior Management
 Required Qualifications: 
  • BA/ Master’s degree in Education with a focus on Reading and Writing in the Elementary School
  • Excellent Arabic language skills (Reading /Writing) and foreign language skills French or English
  • Teacher training experience with a focus on Elementary Education
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience teaching grades 1-6 in Lebanon in the primary grades  
  • Knowledge of the primary grades national Arabic, French or English curriculum scope and sequence
  • Experience in developing and applying teacher diagnostic& formative assessment and how to use results to inform planning for teaching
  • Experience in teaching and/or working at the primary school level in Lebanon preferably cycle 1: Grades 1,2,3

 

 

 

 

  • Ability to coordinate with team members and work on multiple tasks
  • Flexibility with project demands
  • Excellent Educational Technology skills in education
  • Adequate experience in Microsoft office
  • Commitment to work under pressure and to deliver within timelines
  • Advanced interpersonal skills

 

Duration of the Assignment

Full employment for 7 months with possibilities of renewal
