Nurse

Mission of the position: The CV Nurse is responsible for ensuring the health of all children within the SOS Children’s Village and kindergarden, and for promoting the health of SOS staff as well as community children attending other SOS facilities. Furthermore, she serves the surrounding community, depending upon the level of services provided by the SOS Clinic. In all her work she should provide a good role model to the SOS Mothers and children.

Key performance areas and main responsibilities:

 

  1. Ensures the Health of the Children at the village and kindergarden
  1. Ensures that children are well nourished and otherwise healthy by conducting regular health checks (at least quarterly for infants, and twice yearly for older children).
  2. Conducts a programme of preventative health care, including regular weighing and immunisations of all children, particularly infants.
  3. Examines and reports upon all children newly admitted to the Village and kindergarden. Advises the Village Father and SOS Mother on treatment of malnourished or otherwise unhealthy children.
  4. Ensures that children receive prompt and appropriate medical care whenever necessary.

 

  1. Promotes the Health of SOS Staff and Children within Other SOS Projects
  1. Organises training to promote health-care awareness amongst Mothers and other staff. Conducts courses and seminars designed to teach staff about nutrition, hygiene, HIV / AIDS, family planning etc.
  2. Promotes the physical fitness of SOS mothers through encouraging regular exercise and a healthy diet.
  3. Provides medical care and advice to SOS Mothers and other staff as required. Refers more serious cases to the appropriate medical facility or to a visiting medical practitioner.

 

  1. Provides Community Health Care and Education
  1. Provides mothers and children from the surrounding community with preventative and curative health care services. Advises and assists with family planning matters.
  2. Undertakes visits to the local community, as required, in order to assist community members with health-related matters.

 

  1. Maintains Expert Knowledge on Health Care Issues
  1. Keeps up-to-date with health care issues, particularly those issues affecting mothers and children such as family planning, HIV / AIDS, nutrition and hygiene.
  2. Keeps a stock of informative materials regarding health-related issues, for general use.

 

  1. Ensures Efficient Management of the Clinic
  1. Maintains an accurate record of all drugs / medicines in stock. Records all receipts and disbursements and replenishes stocks as required.
  2. Maintains individual files or cards regarding each patient assisted. Keeps accurate records of all treatments, immunisations, weighings etc.
  3. Ensures all payments are collected, receipted and correctly banked.
  4. Prepares a regular report to the Village Father regarding the health status of the Village.

 

  1. Promotes Good Relationships with External Bodies
  1. Develops good relationships with external bodies who may provide financial, material or logistical support for the Clinic. This includes local health authorities, public and private health-care workers, and health / child-care NGOs such as UNICEF.

 

  1. General
  1. Carries out all duties in an exemplary manner and provides a good role model for the children.
  2. Handles NSSF File
  3. Performs any other reasonable duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Child Safeguarding (CS)

  • Responsible to raise awareness of the SOS Child Protection Policy principles and to prevent and protect children from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination
  • Carries out Child Safeguarding (CS) risk assessment within his/her sphere of responsibility and ensures that relevant actions are put in place to mitigate existing and possible CS risks
  • Responsible to report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately, following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the national CS focal person or any other member of the national CS team and/or to respective line manager

Protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA)

  • Take appropriate actions to prevent and reduce the risk of SEA in areas of operation, including through awareness-raising, training, SEA risk assessments, child safeguarding and other measures;
  • Take disciplinary action in response to proven misconduct, in line with relevant internal administrative policies and procedures.
  • Take steps to identify and effectively mitigate against SEA in all programme activities
