Request for Actor/Influencer to work with adolescent’s theatre play with key messages empowering the girls mainly through education.

René Moawad Foundation (RMF) is seeking an Actor/Influencer to work with adolescent’s theatre play with key messages empowering the girls mainly through education” under Malala project ‎implemented by RMF.

Projects description:

At the time where Lebanon is plagued by conflicts, corruption and outstanding inequalities, all cohorts of population are facing devastating crises from collapsed economic and financial sector, to inflation and devaluation of the Lebanese Lira against the USD dollar, to COVID-19 outbreak, to severe food shortages.

Amid all these challenges, there is a marked increase in poverty and vulnerability in the displaced, refugee and Lebanese communities. This means that as the poorest become on the brink, and as the World Bank report suggests, “households come under increasing strain to smooth consumption and delay needed investments in education, nutrition and healthcare.”[1]

This national volatility coupled with population density led 54% (percentage of children and adolescents) of the overall population in Bab Al Tebbaneh area, a long poorer district in Tripoli, North Lebanon with a history of continuous sectarian violence to be at more risk to drop out of school and experience violence, abuse, and exploitation such as child labour (mainly for boys), child marriage (mainly for girls), and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)[2]. Additionally, adolescents (girls and boys) fall between cracks of humanitarian interventions such as education, health and protection, as they neither ‘fit’ in targeted services for children, nor in those for adults.

The “Tebbaneh Neighbourhood Profile” conducted by UNHABITAT in 2018 results show that 24% of adolescents at age of 15 years are out of school and 33% at age of 16 years. While a general lack of learning support services is one reason for the low school enrolment among adolescents, gender inequality and the different roles that adolescent girls and boys play in their families, are another major cause of school drop-out. As families struggle to meet their basic needs, adolescent girls and boys are likely to take up the role of the breadwinner in the family or act as main contributors to family income. Many adolescents start working, oftentimes in hazardous forms of child labour or in exploitative conditions in mechanic shops, in the street, and other industries. When girls and boys are denied their right to education, they are less likely to take advantage of economic opportunities and more likely to remain poor and less resilient.

That said, an integrated programming approach is highly recommended and one stand-alone intervention cannot resolve the tackled dire problems. Therefore, RMF considers this potential partnership as an opportunity for widening its array of its 30-year intervention in the area which is built on socio-ecological approach focusing on crisis-affected and hard-to-reach adolescents for enabling them enjoy their rights and promote gender equality. This will be achieved through a series of proposed activities including: (1) school support classes for 60 schooled at risk to drop out adolescents focusing on girls during two consecutive academic years, (2) provision of Social and Emotional learning activities for 300 crisis – affected vulnerable adolescents (80% of them are girls) and for 200 of their caregivers, (3) organizing Social and Behavioural Change (SBC) activities related to protection concerns with special focus on educating girls for the whole targeted community,  delivery of daily meals for 233 crisis – affected adolescents registered in Bab Al Tebbaneh Complementary school and (4) giving the opportunity to previously trained female youth on cooking to generate income through preparing the meals for the targeted adolescents.
