ABOUT THE PROJECTS

The ‘Strengthening local capacities for social stability in Tripoli and Beqaa’ project is led by International Alert in partnership with the NGOs Basmeh & Zeitooneh (B&Z) and House of Peace (HOPe).

The project is implemented in Tripoli and Beqaa, two areas where social stability has rapidly deteriorated due to a number of factors, including but not limited to the economic crisis, political tension between powerholders and the lack of an agreed crisis recovery plan from the Lebanese government. The approach proposed by Alert, B&Z and HOPe therefore includes two main elements:

•Strengthening the capacities of active local organizations working on protection, education and livelihoods to integrate social stability into their work and pilot community initiatives; and

•Strengthening capacities and supporting youth- and women-led local committees and dialogue groups to implement initiatives in the community, which respond to locally identified needs and create opportunities for interaction and collaboration among refugee and host communities.

The partnership between Alert and the Regional Development and Protection Programme for Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq embodies the engagement principle of localization, by strengthening the capacity of local organizations and local communities. With the two Lebanese partners, B&Z and HOPe, the partnership also supports civil society in responding to the needs of the refugee and host communities.
