UNV Research Assistant

UN Host Entity: ESCWA

Assignment context: The UN Volunteer is responsible to provide substantive support for the conduct of research and provision of technical assistance on food security, agricultural, land use, circular economy concepts, constructs, delivery of Arab regional initiatives, technical assistance for the benefit of ESCWA member states.

Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer, the National UN Volunteer Specialist is responsible to perform the below functions:

• Researches, compiles, analyses, summarizes, and presents basic information, data and indicators on food security, agriculture, land use, natural resource sustainability, circular economy and climate change as they relate to the Arab region; assists in the preparation of PowerPoint presentations, background materials and fact sheets for related deliverables.
• Systematically follows through, retrieves, monitors, highlights and compiles information on food security, food security indicators, rainfed agriculture, good agriculture practices with emphasis on food waste and loss, land degradation and climate change challenges in the Arab region from a wide variety of information sources; prepares inputs on these subjects as required, including preparation of statistical tables and graphs.
• Assembles and catalogues original statistical material, tables and geospatial datasets; adjusts reported data from different sources, and loads data into computerized database system, online platforms and geospatial databases in English and Arabic.
• Assists in the evaluation and examination of indicators and data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
• Assists in the maintenance and population of relevant computerized databases, web applications and geospatial databases in English and Arabic.
• Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts, maps and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
• Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions, listings and geospatial indicator fact sheets for inclusion in documents, articles, books, publications and online platforms.
• Reviews, stores, classifies and maintains relevant computerized databases, including in geospatial platforms.
• Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
• Provides Arabic-English language translations and summaries of document needed for preparing reports and implementing meetings.
• Performs other related work as required.
