Trainer for Raising and Maintaining Livestock – Cattle and Small Ruminant - On Rolling Basis

Background

Mada Association is seeking qualified Trainers for Raising and Maintaining Livestock – Cattle and Small Ruminants - to work under the BMZ-funded project ‘Strengthening the resilience of Syrian refugees and Lebanese host communities in northern Lebanon to the consequences of the country's socio-economic crises by promoting food and income security, rehabilitation of water-related and agricultural infrastructure, trainings, initial provision of households’, implemented by Mada Association in partnership with arche noVa.

The project targets Lebanese and Syrian breeders through direct support, namely distribution of feed, capacity building and training focused on enterprise development, and support to build and/or enhance professional capacity, including integration into the formal market.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

The trainers selected will provide training to one or more lots. Each lot includes 4 villages of two types of breeders, cattle and small ruminant livestock breeders, as follows:

  • Lot 1 (Hrar, Ain Dahab, Qabait and Daoura) includes 6 groups of Cattle livestock breeders and 2 groups of Small Ruminants livestock breeders,
  • Lot 2 (Menieh, Bhanine, Mohamara and Borj el Arab) includes 5 groups of Cattle livestock breeders,

The trainers who are interested can apply to one or more lots. Mada will decide on the distribution of lots and groups among the selected trainers based on the activity's schedule and timeline.

The number of Small Ruminants Livestock Breeders groups might vary based on the project flow.

Main tasks:

  1. Provision of 6 on-site theoretical sessions followed by 4 practical sessions organized by Mada team for each group. The session is equivalent to 3 hours with 20 to 30 minutes break.
  2. Prepare training material (PowerPoint presentation) and its related methodology, in line with the curriculum that will be provided by Mada’s consultant.
  3. Attend a meeting with the curriculum developer and the project team to discuss the content of the curriculum,
  4. Conduct pre and post-tests (provided by Mada) to evaluate the capabilities of the participants and to monitor their progress following the training sessions,
  5. Monitor the attendance of participants and report any issues or drop-outs to Mada’s focal point,
  6. Provide periodic reports (template provided by Mada) to Mada’s focal point on progress, attendance, challenges, successes, and next steps,
  7. At the end of each training cycle (group), provide Mada’s Project Manager with a final report (template provided by Mada) that includes recommendations on further support needed and specific areas of focus required for the skills development of the participants,
  8. Identify livestock breeders' challenges and advise them on appropriate solutions based on test results, with a focus on breeders who are not improving significantly. Based on that, two or three visits per day for two days will be conducted to five selected livestock breeders.
  9. The selected trainers must have the following tools and materials on hand to use during the practical sessions. The tools required included, but were not limited to: Gloves, thermometers, Syringes, Salt blocks, Mastitis test, Hoof trimming scissors and others.

The curriculum developed includes the following chapters:

  1. Introduction
  2. Anatomy
  3. Milk and meat production
  4. Farm management
  5. Examination
  6. Diseases
  7. Breeding and reproduction pathology
  8. Calving
  9. Biosecurity and zoonosis
  10. Nutrition
  11. Vaccination and medication

The selected trainers will deliver the above-mentioned training topics and work closely with livestock breeders in order to create a healthy training environment while using interactive approaches and provide individual support when necessary. Furthermore, Mada’s team will work in close cooperation with the selected trainers in order to ensure that trainings are adequately delivered.

Minimum Qualification and Experience

  • Degree in veterinary, animal production or relevant fields
  • 3 to 4 years of experience in delivering similar trainings
  • Demonstrated experience in Livestock Breeding – Cattles and Small Ruminants
  • Time management, good organizational and communication skills, ability to be flexible
  • Strong interpersonal, reporting and facilitation skills

Time Frame/Duration

The training is constituted of 10 sessions per group, 6 of which are theoretical and 4 of which are practical (3 or 4 sessions per week / maximum 3 weeks per cycle), followed by 5 field visits over two days. The selected trainers are expected to start delivering the training in May 2023.

How to Apply

Interested trainers must submit the following documents to vacancy@mada.org.lb specifying the full title of the consultancy in the subject of the email. Please send:

  1. Personal Curriculum Vitae, including previous work references
  2. A Cover Letter that includes a detailed description of past work in conducting similar trainings to demonstrate their qualifications
  3. To fill and sign Annex A. It is mandatory to specify which lot and which type of breeders are being applied for.

Payments will be made upon the completion of the theoretical and practical sessions, conducting the field visits and delivery of reports, pre and post-tests, and daily attendance sheets as hard copies. The trainers will provide Mada with an invoice including her/his fiscal number in order to receive the payment, if she/he has a fiscal number. If the trainer does not have a fiscal number, Mada will be responsible for complying with the competent tax authorities, and therefore 7.5% of the total amount received by the trainer will be deducted to be paid by Mada to cover the trainer’s taxes.

All submissions not following these guidelines will be automatically rejected.
