Kurdish-English-Arabic Interpreter (On Call/Mission Basis)

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and implement policies in accordance with US Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees & Migration (DOS/PRM) guidelines for United States Refugee Admission Program (USRAP).
  • Provide clear, complete and accurate verbal interpretation during interviews between USCIS officers and Refugees and during other processing activities as needed.
  • Provide accurate translations of written correspondence and other documents from the target language into English.
  • Undertake other duties as required and assigned by the supervisor such as assisting with office set-up, logistics and escorting refugees if/when needed.

Requirmenets:

  •  Must have a university degree, or be a student working towards a university degree, or equivalent experience in translation/interpretation
  • Be a native speaker of the target language
  • Have an excellent command of English and Kurdish
  • Full understanding of the translation/interpretation rules
  • Follow the instructions of the interviewer and avoid side-communications during interviews as well as avoid interaction with the refugee without case manager's or trainer’s permission
  • Be flexible and able to work under pressure and for different departments that may need different competencies and terminology
  • Process information quickly and concisely, recognize sensitive cultural differences and be professional and respectful at all times
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the assignment at all times
  • Be dedicated to working in a multicultural environment
  • Have excellent listening, retention and, when needed, note-taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy
  • Be able to concentrate on and to stay detached from the conversation, remaining neutral and objective at all times and follow the supervisor and the interviewer instructions.
  • Be able to explain idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances to avoid miscommunication
  • Good command of Microsoft Office is preferred
  • Knowledgeof other languages and dialects is an asset
  • The knowledge of appropriate terminology and an understanding of common NGO procedures and practices is preferred.
