DRC Lebanon Emergency Response Update #4: 23 September - 20 October 2024

CONTEXT UPDATE

According to the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has led to 2,412 fatalities, including 95 Lebanese health workers and 11,285 injuries across Lebanon.

To date, the Government of Lebanon reports that over 1 million people have been displaced internally, while more than 400,000 (30% Lebanese and 70% Syrian) have fled to Syria, according to UNHCR. Numbers however, are not exhaustive as many Syrians are crossing illegally to avoid receiving an official stamp, allowing for easier return to Lebanon later. Government-run collective shelters (1,096 in total with 82% at full capacity) primarily host Lebanese nationals (190,882 in total), excluding migrant workers, and Syrian and Palestinian refugees. Notably, the ACHR reports that only 14 collective shelters across Lebanon are currently accepting displaced Syrians. “We arrived from Dahieh [Beirut Southern Suburbs] to Tripoli [north of Lebanon] and we tried to get into a school, but the site manager refused us immediately because we are Syrians. Now we live with 3 other [Syrian] families in an overcrowded apartment, but we don’t have more money to pay the rent so we will go back to Dahieh”
