Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in 1971. Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, and exclusion from health care or natural disasters. MSF in Lebanon currently has 2 projects mainly on primary health care and mental health, in Wadi Khaled and the Bekaa valley.

Scope of responsibility:

Carrying out all activities involving social support to individual patients/survivors and linking them with other relevant support services and communities at large, according to MSF principles and guidelines. Enhancing the target population’s social condition to have an impact on health-related outcomes.

Accountabilities:

  • Conducting social assessments, identifying the social support needs of patients/survivors, including legal, protection, shelter/housing, financial/vocational, food security, and access to medical and psychosocial support services beyond the project intervention scope.
  • Supporting the provision of comprehensive care to patients and their families, by actively coordinating their work with the other members of the MSF multidisciplinary team (eg. medical, MHPSS) and linking with multi-sectoral services such as protection, safety, security, legal, justice, education, and livelihood.
  • Providing direct social support based on social assessments and facilitating referrals to evaluated external re-sources. Provide systematic follow up care regarding attendance of clinical appointments and following up on referrals made to relevant multi-sectoral services aimed at improving the quality of life of patients/survivors.
  • Participating in the creation and maintenance of any material needed for the activities of social workers, including facilities and equipment in order to ensure continuity.
  • Mapping and regular updating of formal and informal support services (incl. existing community resources). Assess quality of existing support services, with identification of gaps and advocacy for an improved culturally appropriate social response.
  • Maintaining records, statistics, files, and reports on all social work activities and follow up care either provided by MSF or other support services. Identifying gaps in the available services and with the team prioritizing and developing plans following the objectives of MSF.

Specific activities:

  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive actor mapping database of external actors providing medical, psychological and social care services.
  • Liaising between external services and MSF patients, act as focal point in interacting with PHCC and other services.
  • Developing and implementing data collection tool to record, follow up and report on all referrals made to external actors.
  • Providing routine updated to the wider medical team on service availability to ensure comprehensive understanding across the MSF team.

On a daily basis:

  • Following the MMUs schedule moving around different locations of operation in accordance with the needs.
  • Ensuring that all the external referral to the PHCC or other are done and follow up on each case.
  • Accompanying the patients to the service, if necessary for specific cases.
  • Attending daily debriefing with the MAM and the rest of the team, reporting on the daily activities carried.

On a weekly basis:

  • Submitting weekly report on activities carried out and changes to MAM and other relevant team members.
  • Reporting and analyzing the dynamics of external requests, highlighting high frequency referral and those that are unsuccessfully closed, and offer proposal for amendments to advocacy activities to meet the identified needs.
  • Attending weekly general project meeting.
  • Being in charge of the finance advances dedicated to the payment of referrals and be accountable for it.

Requirements:

Education

  • Essential: Bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW).  

 

 

Experience

  • Essential: Two years minimum in a similar social job
  • Essential: Experience within the health sector
  • Desirable: MSF or other NGO experience
  • Desirable: Knowledge of the area of intervention

 

 

Languages                        

  • Essential: Full professional proficiency (reading, writing, and speaking) in English and Arabic.
  • Desirable: Proficiency in French at any level.

 

 

Knowledge

  • Essential: Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of MS-Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
