Health Promotion Officer – Hermel – 100% Activity

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in 1971. Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, and exclusion from health care or natural disasters.

Type of contract: 100% Activity rate, Intervention Fixed Term Contract, renewable upon need.

Place of work: Hermel area (MMUs and Clinic).

Scope of responsibility:

Implement and follow up the Health Promotion/IEC (Information, Education, Communication) activities with patients and local population in clinic, camps, or settlements to raise their knowledge and skills on relevant medical topics.

Function responsibilities include:

  • Inform patients and communities about MSF and services it provides.
  • According to medical priorities, deliver information to the patients and community on specific health topics (hygiene, scabies, SGVB…) adapting the session to specific public (women, children, men, teenagers, NCD patients…)
  • Implement activities of health education and awareness (sessions in schools, mosque, community), under the indications and supervision of the Health Promotion (HP) Supervisor.
  • Under the guide of HP Supervisor, assess the impact of activities (with questions, verifications, and behaviors observations), and report problems, success, and constraints to him/her. Complete the daily HP assessment, Kobo SITREP
  • Collect all type of information related to specific health and living conditions of the population, to identify the most vulnerable populations to target.
  • Report to HP Supervisor: activities, problems met, strengths and constraints.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with social partners, including other NGO’s, governmental health services that can provide answers to social problems.
  • Keep education and communication areas clean and tidy and professional materials (leaflet…) available.
  • Participate in creation of any material needed for the activities of information, education, and communication.
  • Actively participate in the activity of other MSF (distribution, medical assessment, MMUs…) to have a general view of the context evolution and the specific needs of the communities.
  • Participate on the preparation of NCD support group and realize the animation.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Provide health education sessions to patients at MSF clinics and/or Medical Mobile Units (MMUs) based on patient medical needs & interest.
  • Go with distribution or medical team to assess the need of population, realise WASH awarness session during WASH intervention.
  • Ensure a good communication with all other MSF department (logistique, WASH, operation,etc).
  • Facilitate training sessions for Community Health Educators (CHEs)/project staff on relevant health topics.
  • Conduct qualitative assessments ((i.e. Patient experience assessments, FGDs) among MSF patients and community beneficiaries to understand and identify community needs, and overall patient satisfaction.
  • Participate on the creation of new tools (game for health education, health movies….).
  • Actively participate in mobile clinic activities with the medical team of nurses and Drs, through provision of tailored health education messages to attending patients.
  • Participate in community based outbreak response activities, including surveillance activities and preventive health education messages.

Requirements:

 

Education

  • Essential: Bachelor's degree in public health, social science, social work, or social communication.
  • Desirable: Bachelor's degree in nursing or education.

Experience

  • Essential: 2 years of previous work experience as a health promoter.
  • Desirable: 1 year of previous work experience in a managerial or supervisory position.
  • Desirable: Previous experience working with local or international NGO in health promotion related roles.

Languages

  • Essential: Full professional proficiency using the Arabic Language.
  • Desirable: Elementary to limited professional proficiency in English.
  • Desirable: Elementary to limited professional proficiency in French.

Knowledge

  • Essential: Basic to intermediate computer literacy using MS-office applications (MS-Word, MS-Outlook, MS-Excel).
