SOCIAL WORKER

Main Purpose

The Social Worker will be carrying out all activities involving social support to individual patients/survivors and linking them with other relevant support services and communities at large, according to MSF principles and guidelines. Enhancing the target population’s social condition to have an impact on health-related outcomes.

Accountabilities

  •  Conducting social assessments, identifying the social support needs of patients/survivors, including legal, protection, shelter/housing, financial/vocational, food security, and access to medical and psychosocial support services beyond the project intervention scope.
  •  Supporting the provision of comprehensive care to patients and their families, by actively coordinating their work with the other members of the MSF multidisciplinary team (eg. medical, MHPSS) and linking with multi-sectoral services such as protection, safety, security, legal, justice, education, and livelihood.
  •  Providing direct social support based on social assessments and facilitating referrals to evaluated external re-sources. Provide systematic follow up care regarding attendance of clinical appointments, and following up on referrals made to relevant multi-sectoral services aimed at improving the quality of life of patients/survivors.
  •  Participating in the creation and maintenance of any material needed for the activities of social workers, including facilities and equipment in order to ensure continuity.
  •  Mapping and regular updating of formal and informal support services (incl.existing community resources). Assess quality of existing support services, with identification of gaps and advocacy for an improved culturally appropriate social response.
  •  Maintaining records, statistics, files, and reports on all social work activities and follow up care either provided by MSF or other support services. Identifying gaps in the available services and with the team prioritizing and developing plans following the objectives of MSF.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Developing and implementing care plans that integrate social support, mental health services, and medical care provided by the MMU team / PHCs.
  • Conducting in-depth assessments of patients' social, emotional, and economic / medical needs, especially in crisis situations.
  • Assisting patients in accessing services such as shelter, food, legal aid, and other social services that may be required.
  • Providing ongoing monitoring and following-up of patients' needs and ensure that the required services are delivered.
  • Providing psycho-social interventions for individuals or families coping with chronic illness, SRH, trauma, or grief.
  • Ensuring appropriate referrals to community resources, mental health services, or specialized care for long-term management.
  • Coordinating with other NGOs focal points, local authorities, and NGOs to facilitate timely access to needed services.
  • Providing education on psychosocial issues, rights, and the availability of services, ensuring patients and their families are informed of how to access support.
  • Educating patients on coping strategies for managing health-related stressors, trauma, and the effects of displacement or crisis.
  • Working closely with the MMU medical / PHCs supporting teams, including doctors, nurses, midwives, HPs and mental health professionals, to ensure holistic patient care that integrates both social and medical needs.
  • Participating in team meetings and contribute to patient care planning, offering insights into the social and emotional aspects of patient care.
  • Acting as a connection between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring clear communication about the patient’s psychosocial needs and challenges.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records of all social work activities, patient assessments, shelters and health care facilities assessments, care plans, and referrals.
  • Ensuring all patient interactions and case management details are documented according to guidelines and legal/ethical standards.
  • providing regular reports on the progress of case management efforts and contribute to program evaluation.
  • Providing immediate support to individuals and families during crisis situations, ensuring they receive the necessary social services, psychological care, and information.
  • Assisting in responding to emergencies where displaced or affected populations require urgent social services alongside medical care.

Requirements

Education

Preferred Bachelor degree in Social work or Medical Social Work.

Experience

Two years minimum in a similar social job; experience with MSF or other NGOs, desirable.

Language & knowledge

Full Proficiency in English and Arabic

Full proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools
