Internal Auditor

Detailed Job Description

Develop and implement a risk-based internal audit plan in coordination with the Head of Operations and in alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.

Conduct periodic internal audits across departments (Finance, HR, Procurement, Programs, Logistics, etc.) to assess the effectiveness of internal controls, accuracy of records, and compliance with donor and legal requirements.

Evaluate financial and operational procedures to ensure integrity, accountability, and cost-efficiency in resource use.

Examine documentation for adherence to organizational policies, donor guidelines, Lebanese regulations, and international auditing standards.

Review procurement procedures, supplier selection, and asset management processes to ensure transparency and fair practices.

Assess grant management and donor reporting systems to confirm compliance and identify risks.

Monitor internal systems to detect and report potential fraud, waste, or abuse.

Issue audit findings and recommendations with clear action points and timelines; follow up with relevant departments on the implementation of corrective measures.

Prepare and submit internal audit reports with high-quality analysis and recommendations to the Executive Director and Board Audit Committee.

Support the preparation and coordination of external audits (financial, donor, and compliance) by ensuring documentation readiness and addressing pre-audit concerns.

Advise management on compliance risks and improvements in internal policies and SOPs.

Train staff and provide awareness sessions on internal control procedures, fraud prevention, and compliance best practices.

Perform ad hoc audits or investigations as requested by the Executive Director or Board.

Maintain a secure and confidential audit archive system for traceability and documentation control.

 

Reports to: Executive Director and Board (with dotted-line coordination with Head of Operations)

Collaborates and Works with: Finance, Procurement, Programs, HR, and Logistics Departments

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; a Master’s degree or CPA/ CIA/ ACCA certification is a strong asset.

At least 5–7 years of internal audit experience, preferably in the NGO, humanitarian, or international development sector.

Thorough understanding of internal audit standards (e.g., IIA Standards), financial management, risk management, and compliance systems.

Knowledge of donor rules and regulations (e.g., UN agencies, LHF/OCHA, ECHO, USAID) and experience auditing donor-funded projects.

Excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.

Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

High level of integrity, independence, and discretion in handling sensitive information.

Ability to prepare clear, concise, and well-structured audit reports with actionable recommendations.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); knowledge of accounting or ERP systems is a plus.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills; fluency in English and Arabic (written and spoken) is required.

Willingness to travel to field offices and implementation sites for audit reviews as needed.
