Request for Proposal_ Story Writer

Background on Step-by-Step

Step-by-Step (SbS) is an evidence-based, self-help digital mental health intervention developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) at the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon. It is implemented in Lebanon in partnership with Embrace. SbS aims to support individuals experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety through a five-session self-help program that is available through a mobile app or website.

The program uses a guided storytelling format to introduce users to practical techniques such as behavioural activation, stress management, and problem-solving. The original adult version of SbS features a cartoon-character story divided into an introduction and five sessions, each approximately five single-spaced pages in length (totalling 30 pages). The narrative follows a relatable character’s journey and challenges, making psychological techniques more engaging and easier to apply.

As part of its mission to expand its service to adolescents, the project requires a dedicated Story Writer with a strong portfolio to develop the story component of the intervention based on SbS guidelines, inspired by the story currently present.

Responsibilities:

The Story Writer is required to:

  1. Story Creation:
    • Understand SBS techniques and information needed for the story content.
    • Understand the SBS timeline.
    • Read the SBS adult stories to inspire the outline of the adolescent intervention story.
    • Create characters with backgrounds compatible for both males and females in the Lebanese context.
    • Create plots and events that span over 5 sessions from start to finish. Include themes and issues related to adolescent’s relationship with parents, bullying, body image, and other relevant themes.
    •     Write up a 30-page single spaced story in English.

  1. Work plan and Communication:

    • Develop a clear work plan and agree on regular check-ins with the Project Manager.
    • Participate in update meetings and incorporate feedback from project stakeholders.
    •  The writer will be expected to edit the content and submit it for approval post update meetings when changes need to be made. This also applies for comments sent after focused-group discussions conducted with adolescents as well as the review of the advisory board supporting the adaptation of Step-by-Step to Adolescents.

  1. Coordination with the Illustrator:

  • The writer is expected to join a meeting with the project manager and the illustrator responsible for drawing the story characters to input on the character design fit. This will be timed around the end of July or beginning of August.
  • The writer is also expected to review the illustrations for any comments.

  1. Work Schedule Requirements:

The writer’s work is based around two deliverables. The first is the full story draft due the end of July, and the second is the final draft due end of September. However, as mentioned above, continuous communication and updates are needed throughout the contract period for editing the work.
