Sudan | Joint Market Monitoring Initiative (JMMI) Market Overview, August 2025

Key Findings

  • Overall, the highest median prices for the Minimum Expenditure Basket (MEB), with and without top-up, were observed in White Nile and Blue Nile states. The most expensive MEBs, with and without top-up items, were recorded in Ar Rusayris (770,828 SDG and 730,828 SDG, respectively), in Blue Nile state, and Rabak (781,011 SDG and 712,511 SDG, respectively), in White Nile state.
  • The median cost of food items in the national MEB indicated an increase of 3% between July (237,134 SDG) and August 2025 (243,499 SDG), driven by a price increase of some food items, such as onions (+45%), vegetable oil (+10%), sorghum (+8%), and goat meat (+6%), indicating continued inflationary pressure in the food market.
  • The most expensive food components in the MEB were reported in Um Dam Haj Ahmed (357,732 SDG), in North Kordofan state. In contrast, the lowest food prices were reported in Ag Genina (161,094 SDG), in West Darfur state.
  • The median cost of non-food items (NFIs) without top-up in the MEB increased by 6% from July (120,841 SDG) to August 2025 (128,237 SDG) across the assessed localities, driven by a price increase of water supply (+10%) and gas refill (+6%).
  • The most expensive NFI component of the MEB without top-up items was reported in Ar Rusayris (333,867 SDG), in Blue Nile state, and in Rabak (306,524 SDG), in White Nile state.
  • Overall, markets were found to be least functional in Central Darfur, where 4 out of 6 assessed markets scored less than 50 out of a maximum of 100, and in Kassala, where 2 out of 4 assessed markets scored less than 50. The lowest score was recorded in Wadi Salih, in Central Darfur (=34/100). Additionally, findings from this assessment show that most of the markets recorded financial barriers to access markeplaces and price volatility, along with challenges in the supply chain & restocking.
