UNHCR Sudan: Flash Update #6 – Darfur and Kordofan Situation Update (15-31 January 2026)

Situation Overview and Humanitarian Needs

• The protection environment in the Darfur and Kordofan States is precarious with armed clashes, air and drone strikes, and heightened insecurity persisting.
• Overall access constraints because of ongoing hostilities, insecurity and bureaucratic delays are hampering the delivery of humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected people in the region.
• In North Darfur, the security situation in parts of the Dar Zaghawa area, including Tine locality, remains precarious following a series of armed attacks that have forced civilians to flee their homes and damaged critical infrastructure.
• Despite reports that the sieges in Kadugli and Dilling ended in the first week of February, the security situation in North and South Kordofan is still unstable with regular reports of fighting in various locations in the states. As a result, civilians face protection risks including loss of life and injury, family separation, heightened food insecurity, and an increased risk of conflict-related sexual violence.
• On 6 February, a WFP convoy traveling from Kosti, White Nile State to deliver food assistance to displaced families near El Obeid, North Kordofan was attacked resulting in several casualties. Targeting humanitarian convoys in violation of International Humanitarian Law poses risks to civilians and humanitarian workers, critically limits humanitarian access and disrupts the delivery of life-saving assistance to those most in need.
• Priority needs for displaced people and hosting communities in affected areas range from food to access to water and sanitation facilities, health care services, and mental health and psychosocial support, all of which increase protection risks, particularly for women, children, and persons with disabilities. In the Kordofan region, men and boys additionally face protection risks such as restricted freedom of movement, arrest or detention, forced recruitment, and family separation.
