UNFPA Sudan 2025 Annual Report

FOREWORD

2025 marked one of the most devastating chapters in Sudan’s recent history. Across the country, communities endured overlapping humanitarian crises that affected the lives of millions across Sudan. Across Darfur and Kordofan regions, hundreds of thousands of people—overwhelmingly women and children—were forced to flee their homes in search of safety. Entire communities were displaced multiple times, escaping violence only to encounter further uncertainty and fear. Many women and girls walked days under harsh conditions, carrying children, and surviving with little food, water, or protection.

Some women gave birth along roadsides without skilled medical care, essential supplies, or even basic shelter. While many survived these unimaginable journeys, others tragically lost their lives along the way.

Maternity hospitals, places that should be sanctuaries of care and hope were also targeted. In a war where even delivery rooms were not spared, there were no truly safe spaces for women and girls, nor for the medical teams risking their lives to care for them.

Humanitarian access remained severely constrained throughout the year. Despite immense challenges and extremely limited resources, UNFPA teams and partners remained steadfast, delivering essential health services, protection support, and emergency assistance—standing alongside women and girls, who had nowhere else to turn. We did not give up. We will not give up.

While active conflict persisted in several regions, fragile stability began to emerge in others, offering some families the possibility of return. Yet many who returned home found health facilities damaged, infrastructure destroyed, and public services barely functioning.

This report offers a snapshot of our work across Sudan during this critical period. It highlights how, even amid immense hardship, sustained humanitarian action has helped protect lives, preserve dignity, and support women and girls through one of the most challenging times in Sudan’s history.
