Syrian Arab Republic - Emergency Mobility Tracking and Cross Border Monitoring Situation Update - Round 1 (9 March 2026)

OVERVIEW

As of 9 March 2026, the escalation of hostilities in neighbouring Lebanon has led to significant cross-border movements into the Syrian Arab Republic (hereafter referred to as Syria), following a significant escalation in hostilities that began on 28 February 2026 across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. These escalations have led to the disruption of essential services, population displacement, cross border movements, and the closure of key access routes, including the closure of Syrian airspace (1 March). As of 4 March, the General Authority of Civil Aviation announced the resumption of operations at Aleppo International Airport (Damascus International Airport remains closed)

Between 2 and 8 March, DTM recorded 58,976 individuals who had arrived across 699 locations of arrival across Syria's 14 governorates. Individuals at arrival locations were primarily Syrian nationals (100%), with less than 1 per cent Lebanese nationals.

Approximately 89,554 movements were recorded entering Syria via three Points of Entry (PoEs) at the Syrian-Lebanese border as of 9 March. Individuals crossing into Syria were primarily Syrian nationals (93%), followed by Lebanese nationals (7%). Those arriving in Syria were reportedly in need of transportation, food, and cash assistance.

Additionally, reports of Lebanese families transiting through Syria with the intention of traveling to other countries were recorded. Between 2 and 9 March, approximately 60 Lebanese families were observed heading toward Jordan through the Nassib border crossing. Key informants reported the presence of logistical obstacles observed at border crossings, with delays in processing and issuing legal documents.
