AUB NGOi Online Synchronous Course | Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) for NGOs

The Non-Governmental Organizations Initiative at the American University of Beirut is opening registration for its upcoming online synchronous course on 'Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) for NGOs'.

Course Description

This course is designed to help develop the skills needed to effectively design, plan, and manage MEAL programs for NGOs. MEAL supports program managers in planning the monitoring of progress in activity implementation against planned targets, evaluating progress toward expected results, and utilizing this information to continuously learn, adapt, and report to stakeholders.

This course enables participants to define the MEAL cycle and its components, and to understand the MEAL phase model design, including logic models such as the Theory of Change (ToC), Results Framework (RF), and Logical Framework. It also supports participants in developing a MEAL plan and describing data collection, learning, and reporting processes, including the tools used, frequency of collection, responsible staff, and quality assurance measures. The course further covers how to analyze MEAL data and use it to inform management decisions, strengthen communication, and promote accountability.

After the successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the core principles and purpose of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) within humanitarian and development programming.
  • Apply practical tools for MEAL across the program cycle.
  • Apply results frameworks, indicators, and data collection tools to track progress and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Analyze MEAL data to assess performance, identify gaps, and generate actionable learning.
  • Implement accountability mechanisms for affected populations and stakeholders through feedback, participation, and adaptive management approaches.
  • Apply learning to program improvement, reporting, and strategic decision-making.
