Agricultural Engineer

Background 

 

Within the framework of the project “Humaniterra: Cultivating Recovery and Preserving Nature to Meet Humanitarian Needs in Akkar (2025–2026)”, Acted and its partners Mada and Al Hadatha are implementing a 12-month action that enhances food security, strengthens livelihoods, and promotes climate-resilient agricultural practices in the Al Ostuan River Basin, Akkar governorate. 

 

The project combines cash-for-work (CFW) opportunities for vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian individuals with technical support to small and medium farmers, the introduction of adaptive greenhouses, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation systems, and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). It also integrates environmental awareness, community stabilization activities, and peer-to-peer organizational capacity strengthening. 

 

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Agricultural Engineer will provide technical guidance to farmers, CFW participants, and partner organizations, ensuring the high-quality design and implementation of agriculture-related activities. 

Adherence with Acted’s greening policy:

Adherence with Acted’s PSEAH policy: 

(Agricultural Engineer) has the responsibility to adhere to the PSEAH Policy (Protection against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment). The (Agricultural Engineer) has the obligation to complete all mandatory trainings related to the Code of Conduct and the PSEA policy and report any safeguarding concern such as breaches of organisational policies or codes of conduct according to Acted’s procedures. The (Agricultural Specialist) carries out work duties in a way that does not harm children, vulnerable adults or other staff or volunteers. 

JOB PURPOSE  

The Agricultural Engineer is responsible for supporting the implementation of climate-smart agriculture activities, strengthening farmers’ capacity, supervising CFW technical works (greenhouses, irrigation, fixtures), and providing continuous coaching and monitoring to ensure the adoption of sustainable practices in line with the project’s objectives. 

Objectives 

The Agricultural Engineer contributes to project delivery by: 

Providing technical guidance on adaptive agriculture, GAP, rainwater harvesting, and drip irrigation. 

Supervising and coaching CFW workers during greenhouse installation and household fixture installation. 

Supporting farmers to adopt climate-smart practices that increase yields and reduce reliance on costly inputs. 

Facilitating awareness sessions and demonstration plots showcasing practical sustainable farming practices. 

Ensuring that activities are implemented in a conflict-sensitive, gender-inclusive, and environmentally sustainable manner. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

1. Technical Support and Capacity Building 

Deliver technical training to selected farmers on GAP, adaptive greenhouses, irrigation, and rainwater harvesting. 

Provide ongoing coaching and follow-up visits to beneficiary farms to ensure adoption of climate-smart practices. 

Train and guide CFW participants (including women) on technical tasks such as installation of rainwater harvesting systems, water-saving fixtures, and greenhouse works. 

Support demonstration plot setup and learning visits for communities. 

2. Supervision of Agricultural Works 

Oversee the design and installation of adaptive/passive greenhouse elements (ventilation, shading, drip irrigation). 

Supervise CFW teams during agricultural infrastructure works, ensuring adherence to technical standards. 

Provide troubleshooting and technical adjustments during installation of irrigation and water-saving systems. 

3. Monitoring, Reporting and Knowledge Sharing 

Conduct regular field visits to farms, CFW sites, and households to ensure quality implementation. 

Contribute to project progress reports with technical inputs, lessons learned, and recommendations. 

Support MEAL team in baseline, monitoring, and endline assessments. 

Document success stories and innovative practices for dissemination. 

4. Stakeholder Engagement 

Maintain strong collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture, municipalities, cooperatives, and local CSOs. 

Act as a liaison between beneficiaries and the project team, ensuring accountability and feedback loops. 

Support awareness campaigns on climate change, food systems, and sustainable agriculture. 

5. Compliance and Safeguarding 

Ensure all activities comply with Acted’s greening strategy, environmental standards, and gender mainstreaming approach. 

Adhere to Acted’s PSEAH Policy (Protection against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment). 

Promote conflict-sensitive approaches and ensure activities “do no harm.” 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred). 

Minimum 3 years’ experience in agriculture programming, preferably with international NGOs. 

Proven expertise in climate-smart agriculture, irrigation systems, adaptive greenhouses, and GAP. 

Experience in training and supervising CFW workers and smallholder farmers. 

Strong knowledge of Lebanon’s agricultural context, especially Akkar. 

Experience working with local authorities, cooperatives, and community groups. 

Good computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). 

Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to coach and motivate diverse groups. 

Fluency in Arabic (mandatory); working knowledge of English (desirable). 

Commitment to gender equality, environmental protection, and social cohesion. 

Skills: 

Proven capacity of using MS Excel, MS Word, power point and MS Outlook 

Fluent Arabic and English language  

On-field training skills 

Familiarity with the culture of the affected population; understanding of how to gain respect from a wide range of people; strong ability to communicate effectively 

Positive attitude toward project beneficiaries 

Gender sensitivity  

Strong organizational skills, including assessing priorities, strategic planning, meeting deadlines and attention to detail and quality 

Ability to work flexibly and on tight deadlines, handle multitasking and prioritise more important tasks 

Good negotiating and communication skills in a fast-paced, multicultural and challenging environment
