Shelter Assistant

Key Responsibilities

Assessment and Data Collection

  • Conduct Unified Assessments and other shelter-related assessments in Informal Settlements (ISs), collective shelters, and other targeted locations.
  • Collect, verify, and update beneficiary and shelter data using approved assessment tools and digital platforms.
  • Participate in household visits and technical assessments to identify vulnerabilities and assistance needs.
  • Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and compliance with UNHCR assessment methodologies.

Data Management and Reporting

  • Review assessment data and perform quality checks before submission.
  • Maintain organized assessment records, databases, and beneficiary files.
  • Prepare assessment summaries, statistics, and progress reports.
  • Support data analysis and contribute to activity planning and prioritization.

Beneficiary Verification and Follow-Up

  • Conduct phone and field verification with beneficiaries when required.
  • Support referral tracking and follow-up of identified cases.
  • Assist in updating beneficiary lists and maintaining assessment trackers.

Coordination and Field Support

  • Coordinate with field teams, municipalities, community focal points, and partner organizations during assessments.
  • Support planning and scheduling of field activities.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and provide assessment-related updates.

Emergency Response Support

  • Support Rapid Needs Assessments (RNA) following emergencies, conflict-related displacement, severe weather events, fires, or other humanitarian incidents.
  • Assist in identifying urgent shelter and basic assistance needs and support emergency response activities.

Accountability and Protection

  • Ensure assessments are conducted in a respectful, confidential, and protection-sensitive manner.
  • Promote accountability to affected populations and facilitate beneficiary feedback and referrals when needed.
  • Ensure consideration of age, gender, diversity, and vulnerability criteria during assessments.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Data Management, Humanitarian Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1-2 year of relevant experience in humanitarian assessments, data collection, shelter, or community-based programming.
  • Experience working with refugees, displaced populations, and vulnerable communities is an asset.
  • Experience using Kobo Toolbox, ODK, Survey123, RAIS, ActivityInfo, or similar data management platforms is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong data collection and reporting skills.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote and challenging environments.
  • Fluency in Arabic and good working knowledge of English.
