After 500 days under siege, the city of Al Fasher in Sudan’s North Darfur has become an epicentre of child suffering, with malnutrition, disease, and violence claiming young lives daily, UNICEF warned today.

Lebanon remained in the grip of a worsening humanitarian crisis during the first half of 2025, driven by prolonged economic collapse, persistent conflict, and regional instability.

El Fasher, North Darfur, has been under siege and affected by continuous fighting for 15 months, leading to extreme levels of needs, severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies.

During the first half of 2025, children and families in Lebanon continued to endure the repercussions of the armed conflict that escalated in 2024, further weakening an already deteriorated economy and overstretched public services.

Between 6 and 12 August, the security situation in As-Sweida Governorate remained tense, with multiple incidents of armed violence and clashes reported across both rural and urban areas.

Casualty numbers have been provided by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Israeli authorities. The fatality breakdowns currently cited are those that the MoH in Gaza has fully identified as of 31 July 2025 out of the higher number of casualties they report.

The reported deaths of 100 children due to starvation in Gaza [1] since October 2023 is a devastating milestone that shames the world and demands urgent action, Save the Children said.

Following the escalation of violence between 12 to 19 July, the security situation in As-Sweida Governorate remains tense, with intermittent clashes and restricted mobility—despite recently granted humanitarian access; roadblocks and insecurity continue to hinder aid delivery.

In June 2025, WFP reached an estimated 3.6 million people across all activities. This included reaching 1.6 million people in famine and risk of famine (RoF) areas in Sudan, accounting for almost 80% of the population located in Famine and RoF areas.

Hostilities continued in As-Sweida Governorate, particularly the western countryside, despite a ceasefire agreement, contributing to a volatile security environment and impacting civilian safety.

One year since famine was first confirmed in Sudan’s Zamzam camp in North Darfur, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warns that the families trapped inside the besieged state capital, El Fasher, face starvation.

Over 1.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) returned to their areas of origin, highlighting emerging recovery needs and growing service gaps.

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i. for Syria led the first high-level, inter-agency mission to As-Sweida Governorate since the onset of hostilities, visiting As-Sweida City, Shahba, and Salkhad towns to assess humanitarian needs and deliver assistance.

If there is political will to allow airdrops - which are highly costly, insufficient and inefficient, there should be similar political will to open the road crossings.

Conflict continues to ravage Sudan, driving over 25.6 million people, 54% of the population, into hunger. Of these, 3.7 million are children aged below the age of five, many of whom are acutely malnourished and suffering irreversible harm.

On the IPC’s new warning that “the worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip,” Islamic Relief says:

This new alert confirms the inhumane scenes our staff and partners in Gaza are witnessing every day – famine is taking hold and people are being starved to death.

This suffering is entirely man-made. It’s caused by Israel’s relentless attacks and cruel blockade that stops food and medicine from reaching starving people, and by world leaders’ shameful failure to take action.
