The intensity of the present conflict in Lebanon has already claimed the lives of more children per day than the 2006 conflict.

UNRWA declared the activation of its Emergency Response in Lebanon on 24 September 2024, immediately opening two emergency shelters. Between 25 September and 27 September, UNRWA has opened five additional emergency shelters, bringing the total number of operational UNRWA emergency shelters to seven.

The past few days saw unprecedented escalation of Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon including the South, southern suburb of Beirut and the Bekaa, with attacks increasing in number and the scope expanding to additional areas across the country, such as Mount Lebanon and North Lebanon. Israeli forces stated that they conducted over 1,500 strikes between September 23-24. The destruction of civilian infrastructure and the level of damage in residential areas has caused massive civilian casualties and displacement.

It’s been almost a year since the war on Lebanon started in absolute silence from the international community. The last two weeks however have witnessed a horrific increase in violence, with so far and according to the latest figures, 690 deaths, including 50 children and 94 women, in addition to 2316 injured, and more than 111,700 individuals displaced.

Geneva (ICRC) — As civilian deaths and injuries continue to rise, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is urgently appealing for parties to the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law and to protect and respect civilian life and infrastructure.

Beirut, 25 September – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has released its latest Mobility Tracking displacement update showing at least 90,350 people have become newly displaced since 19 September, following the latest military escalation in Lebanon.

Oxfam is responding to the escalating crisis in Lebanon, providing essential support to the hundreds of thousands of people who have been forced to flee as Israeli airstrikes bombard their homes and communities. The influx of internally displaced people, primarily from southern Lebanon, will quickly create disastrous conditions for local communities, beyond the ability of an overloaded international humanitarian system to properly meet.

In response to the ongoing developments and the escalating conflict in Lebanon, UNRWA announces the opening of two of its Designated Emergency Shelters (DESs) for displaced individuals: Toubas School in Nahr El Bared in the north and Siblin Training Centre in the south. UNRWA management teams are on the ground at these DESs to receive and support the displaced. Additional DESs will be opened as needed. Yesterday (Monday 23 September 2024) Lebanon suffered its bloodiest day since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war. According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli aerial strikes killed 558 people, including first responders, women, and 50 children. More than 1,800 people were wounded and thousands more families have been forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in crowded schools.

In response to the recent surge in violence in Lebanon, Dorcas Lebanon has swiftly taken action to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to those displaced by the conflict. The team in Beirut has begun distributing essential supplies, including blankets, mattresses, food, and hygiene products, to displaced people. Alongside these immediate provisions, they are also offering mental health and psychosocial support. Many are grappling with feelings of fear, insecurity, and uncertainty.

Following the widescale Israeli bombings of multiple areas in Lebanon on Monday 23 September, we are gradually stepping up our response to the escalating humanitarian needs. MSF teams are providing general healthcare and essential relief items to displaced people. According to the Ministry of Health, 558 people have been killed and 1,835 injured, with thousands more forced to flee their homes to seek refuge elsewhere in the country.
