ACT for the Disappeared is a local non-profit, non-partisan Lebanese human rights organization based in Beirut. Act aims to support the families of the missing and provide them with recognition and reparation and contribute to the clarification of the fate of forcibly disappeared and missing persons in Lebanon.
The project
In 2015, ACT launched a memorialization project that aimed to alleviate the families' emotional isolation and empower them by participating in a collective effort to commemorate their loved ones. The activity consisted of giving the opportunity to missing persons’ relatives to express emotions whilst developing, with the support of an art therapist, a commemorative artwork. At the same time, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also initiated an accompaniment project that aims at assisting the families of the missing through psychosocial support groups and information sessions. The groups provide the families with a common space where they can express their experiences, thoughts and worries. Another outcome of the groups is the mobilization of families to carry out awareness raising activities such as organizing activities for the international day of the Disappeared.
ACT and the ICRC decided to join their efforts and collaborate in order to provide the families with a holistic and wide-ranging assistance. This new partnership, initiated in 2016, has been very successful and will be reinforced in 2017 in order to reach more people in need. In 2017, ACT and the ICRC plan to implement the project in two new districts Tyre and Chouf, while continuing the work in previous three districts Saida, Aley and Baabda. A total of 200 relatives of missing persons are foreseen to participate in the project.
