Communications Intern

Background ACTED is a French humanitarian NGO, founded in 1993, which supports vulnerable populations, affected by humanitarian crises worldwide. ACTED provides continued support to vulnerable communities by ensuring the sustainability of post-crisis interventions and engaging long-term challenges facing our target populations, in order to break the poverty cycle, foster development and reduce vulnerability to disasters. Our interventions seek to cover the multiple aspects of humanitarian and development crises through a multidisciplinary approach which is both global and local, and adapted to each context. Our 4 000 staff is committed in to responding to emergencies worldwide, to supporting recovery and rehabilitation, towards sustainable development. Our teams in the field implement some 380 projects in 34 countries covering the following sectors emergency relief, food security, access to health, education and training, economic development, microfinance, advocacy, institutional support, and regional dialogue, cultural promotion. Assignment Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Communication intern will be in charge of developing and implementing a communication strategy and launching ACTED’s media campaign in relation to community WASH projects implemented in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, as well as to support other communication initiatives. Roles and responsibilities: Develop and implement a communication strategy for ACTED community WASH projects Maintain and follow up on all media platforms (social media, newspapers, radio) Ensure effective flow of information to target audiences and provide regular updates to ensure continued public interest Draft and edit articles, human interest stories and other information materials, collect quality photographs of field activities Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of media coverage, clippings etc. Design visibility materials around the sub-projects, and support with the community outreach activities (presentations, billboard design ,etc).   Within the three month internship, although exposed to a number of communications and media activities, the Communication consultant will be primarily responsible for ensuring the successful implementation of the following communication project:   ACTED will run two mass media campaigns tackling environmental issues in Lebanon: water scarcity and solid waste management. In order to attract a larger audience and create additional publicity around the campaign, ACTED will hold a competition and invite participants to submit a media campaign. The competition will be open to all types of media (radio ads, short films, bill boards, posters, website, etc). The entrants will submit their pieces to an online platform (most likely facebook), which will be publically accessible. The entrants will submit their public awareness plan, including: the locations of the campaign (if relevant), the target audience, their personal views and experience of the SWM problems in Lebanon and the intended impact of their campaign. The entrant must include a media plan to run the campaign for one month, and the costs must not exceed $5000. The entrants will have one month to submit, and the winning entry will be awarded a cash prize and the winning campaign will be run on the chosen media for one month. The prizes will be awarded based on online public voting.   The communication intern will therefore promote the online competition on social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, etc.) where feasible in line with ACTED global communication policies, ensure all key organisations are informed (such as universities / media groups, etc.) and manage the public voting process for competitions and ensure proper outreach.   Skills: Excellent written and oral English communication skills and proficiency in Arabic are required. Advanced working knowledge of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher). Demonstrated and extensive social media experience/presence Candidates with basic design and layout skills (Adobe Photoshop, In Design) are an added advantage.   The candidate should have high level of integrity and accountability. He/she should also demonstrate and be exemplary in portraying humanitarian values and ethics. He/she should be a good team player.   This is a part time unpaid internship, and the commitment per week is expected to be approximately 20 hours.
