ABOUT ACTION AGAINST HUNGER
Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a global humanitarian organization that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger. We save the lives of malnourished children. We ensure families can access clean water, food, training, and healthcare. We enable entire communities to be free from hunger. We are present in Lebanon since 2006 implementing projects in the following sectors: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; Nutrition and Mental Health; Food Security and short-term Livelihoods such as Cash for Work and Income Generation Activities.
BACKGROUND
The impact of the economic crisis on the agricultural sector in Lebanon can be classified as devastating. In several assessments conducted by the AAH Lebanon, all the respondents highlighted that they started to face difficulties in accessing the raw materials and assets due to the inflation, water for irrigation, COVID-19 restrictions and now fuel shortages in the country, directly decreasing the production volume and consequently the revenue for the small-scale farmers that also have post-harvesting obstacles. Many of them had to reduce the number of people working in the field to decrease the production cost, and even a few had to close their businesses temporarily. In addition to these challenges, there is also a need to enhance farmers` knowledge about marketing and branding to improve sales as well as rendering them to acquainted with the up-to-date market information.
Taking these factors into consideration, Action Against Hunger Lebanon, under the project ‘Improving the food security and nutrition of the multi-crisis affected population through the provision of income support and livelihoods restoration in Lebanon’ kindly funded by the French Embassy in Lebanon, is supporting the small-scale farmers and cooperatives by providing assets and rehabilitating the water irrigation systems to increase the production activity, and by training them in business management topics to develop their value chain, improve the access to new markets and accelerate their businesses in Bekaa and South Lebanon.
PURPOSE OF THE SERVICE:
The aim of this audio-visual product is to show the worsening challenges and needs that the Lebanese agricultural sector is facing—with an advocacy component—while highlighting the positive impact of the initiative not only on the participants receiving the support but also on the local market, thus contributing to a sustainable agriculture and a self-sufficient and more stable economy.
From an individual human perspective and focusing on one farmer—in first person—the video will document his/her daily life during all the agricultural process starting from the preharvest activities, the production, and the trading with our support in all the stages. Thus, the product will illustrate that, against all odds, a feasible, durable, and locally based food market is possible when the right assistance is provided, by strengthening the farmers’ own capacities to develop their activities with any external intervention.
The final product’s formats will be a short documentary (10 min max.) serving as an audio-visual summary of the project results and 1 social media video (1 min max.) showing each phase of the project implementation and its impact on the farmer’s work/life to be shared with the municipalities involved and all relevant external audiences such as donors, institutions, international community, local communities, Lebanese general public, and, possibly, Spanish audiences (to be confirmed).
