The BLN Teacher is a key member of Ana Aqra’s field implementation team, responsible for teaching out-of-school children aged 10–14 who are enrolled in Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLN) programs at community centers. The teacher will plan, organize, and deliver instructional sessions using Ana Aqra’s endorsed Quality Teaching and Learning (QTL) Model, fostering literacy, numeracy, and essential learning skills. The role aims to provide out-of-school children with the foundational knowledge and confidence needed to continue their educational journey. The teacher works under the supervision of the Field Officer and Monitor.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials tailored for BLN learners.
- Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessments in line with Ana Aqra procedures and BLN learning objectives.
- Facilitate literacy and numeracy instruction through learner-centered, interactive, and participatory approaches.
- Use diverse resources and relevant technologies to support and differentiate instruction for varying levels of ability.
- Create a safe, supportive classroom environment, managing behavior through positive discipline and clear expectations.
- Monitor learners’ progress, provide constructive feedback, and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of learners’ attendance, progress, and assessments as required.
- Prepare reports on learners’ learning achievements and challenges.
- Communicate regularly with learners, colleagues, parents/caregivers, and the community to support learners’ progress and engagement.
- Promote parental and community involvement in the education of out-of-school children.
- Observe, assess, and document learners’ performance using available tools, including baseline and endline assessments.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and cultural competence in working with children from diverse and vulnerable backgrounds.
- Participate actively in Ana Aqra’s professional development activities, including training and coaching sessions.
- Maintain confidentiality and build respectful relationships with learners, teacher assistants, field officers, monitors, and other Ana Aqra staff.
Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. degree in Education or related field (mandatory).
- Teaching diploma from an accredited institution (preferred).
- 2–3 years of teaching experience, ideally with out-of-school or BLN learners; public school experience is considered an asset.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Reliability and punctuality in reporting to work.
- Commitment to Ana Aqra’s mission and objectives.
- Follow Ana Aqra’s child protection and safeguarding policies.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Proven experience in teaching literacy and numeracy, preferably with out-of-school or vulnerable children.
- Evidence of success in improving learners’ literacy and numeracy outcomes.
- Strong knowledge of child-centered pedagogy.
- Demonstrated use of diverse instructional strategies, resources, and educational technologies.
- Ability to collect and use data for instructional decision-making.
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Awareness of equity issues and inclusion in education.
Working conditions
- Deliver BLN classes in community learning centers.
- Work on weekdays/weekends with flexibility for occasional training or coaching/reflection sessions in evenings or weekends.
- Operate in multi-cultural and resource-constrained settings, working with out-of-school children.
- Collaborate with teacher assistants, field officers, monitors, trainers, and other Ana Aqra staff.
- Deliver program activities and provide support to children and their caregivers remotely, as required by the program.
