About Assabil:

Assabil is a non-governmental organization founded in 1997 to promote reading and free access to culture. By creating public libraries as non-sectarian and open spaces for cultural exchange and providing access to information and reading, Assabil filled a void in postwar Lebanon.

The 1998 municipal elections prompted Assabil to organize a national conference the following year to lobby for public reading and the creation of libraries in municipalities all over Lebanon – and to launch an effort to create a network of public libraries in the country.

In cooperation with Ile-de-France Region, Assabil reached a historic agreement with the Municipality of Beirut to establish a network of municipal public libraries. The first municipal public library of Beirut opened its doors in 2000 in Bachoura. It is surrounded by approximately 20 public schools that are located within a 10-minute walking distance. Assabil has also opened libraries in Geitawi (2004) and Monot (2008) and launched a mobile library in 2008 to serve primarily public schools and non-formal education centers in remote areas.

What We Do

We welcome people of all ages, religions, and socio-economic and educational backgrounds to enjoy our services that include:

• Free access to the three municipal public libraries of Beirut
• A network of 20 public libraries all around Lebanon
• Community outreach through a mobile library that visits public schools and NGOs serving underprivileged children
• Regular cultural and educational activities in Beirut
• Resource material and activity toolkits targeting librarians and educators
• A Resource and Training Center for professionals in public libraries, schools, cultural centers, and community-based organizations
• Consultancy services for individuals and entities interested in establishing libraries

We also seek partnerships with municipalities across Lebanon to establish and operate public libraries.

Designated Project: Beirut’s Public Libraries Offer Distance Learning Support

This project aims to support students’, parents’ and teachers’ distance learning experience through relevant activities and services in Beirut’s Municipal Public Libraries.

Through this project ASSABIL is recruiting 9 tutors to provide homework and study support for Beirut public school student in grades 4 & 5 via Beirut public municipal libraries for foreign language, Arabic and Math & Science subjects.

Homework support program (similar to home tutoring) will be established in the three libraries. In each library the following tutors will be hired to offer homework support 4 days per week (Mon - Thurs), 2 hours per day (3:30pm – 5:30pm).

3 Foreign language tutor (English or French)

3 Arabic tutor

3 Math & Science tutor

Targeted Profile: University students and/or unemployed teachers with knowledge of the grade 4 & 5 curriculum (preferably residing near Bachoura, Geitawi and Monot neighborhoods).

Role & Scope of Work:

• Offer tutoring online (via zoom or teams) for students in Grade 4 & 5 during the months of April-June 2021.
• Explaining the lesson required of the student’s homework and carrying out practical activities on the given lesson.
• Focusing on the student’s weaknesses, and addressing them and making note of them.
• Challenging and inspiring pupils to help them think critically and deepen their knowledge of subjects.
• Follow-up of student exam marks on a permanent basis to know the student’s progress.
• Communicate with parents and ASSABIL program management team regarding student’s progress and/or any issues to occur during tutoring sessions on a daily basis.
• Ensure all data and information referred to the project manager is correct and revised.
