Legal Consultant

Basmeh & Zeitooneh is a registered Lebanese organization, committed to serving refugees and vulnerable communities in Lebanon through six community centers across the country. Job Purpose: Provide legal consultation for 145 cases, and conduct marriage registration for 145 cases

Reports To: Project Manager 

Major Activities: 

Legal Consultations

  • Provide tailored legal consultations to participants on matters including but not limited to civil documentation, family law, legal status, housing, and labor rights.
  • Identify legal needs, advise on procedures, and assist participants in understanding their rights and obligations.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and confidential case documentation and follow-up logs.

Marriage Registration Services

  • Facilitate the legal registration of marriages in accordance with Lebanese laws and procedures.
  • Prepare all necessary legal documents (e.g., declarations, power of attorney, marriage contracts).
  • Accompany or represent participants at notary public offices, religious courts, or with the mukhtar, where applicable.
  • Ensure proper submission and receipt of official marriage certificates.

Coordination and Support

  • Coordinate with internal teams (protection, field staff, etc.) to ensure referrals and follow-up of legal cases.
  • Liaise with local authorities, legal institutions, and civil/religious bodies to facilitate service provision.
  • Participate in team meetings, and coordination efforts as required.

Deliverables

  • Legal consultations provided to an agreed number of cases per month.
  • Successful registration of an agreed number of marriage cases within the assignment period.
  • Case files maintained and updated in accordance with organizational standards.

Education & Experience: 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law; License to practice law in Lebanon required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in legal practice, preferably in the humanitarian or civil documentation field.
  • In-depth knowledge of Lebanese personal status laws (including religious and civil procedures).
  • Experience working with refugees or vulnerable populations is an asset.
  • Excellent written and spoken Arabic; working knowledge of English preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to confidentiality and ethical conduct.

  • Strong understanding of Lebanese civil and personal status law, particularly in areas related to family law, marriage registration, and refugee legal rights.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously, maintain accurate documentation, and follow through on legal procedures and deadlines.
  • Skilled in interpreting legal texts, identifying relevant laws and precedents, and providing legally sound advice.
  • Experienced in liaising with notaries, courts, and other relevant civil and religious bodies.

Behavioral:

  • Shows empathy, cultural sensitivity, and respect in all participants interactions; prioritizes voluntary, safe, and informed decision-making.
  • Takes responsibility for quality and timeliness of work; ensures commitments to participants and team are met.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with participants, colleagues, and stakeholders; able to explain complex legal terms in simple language.
  • Comfortable working in changing contexts or under pressure; adjusts priorities based on field needs and organizational guidance.
