A brief description of the program:
WE4F aims to:
- Increase food production along the value chain through a more sustainable and efficient usage of water and/or energy.
- Increase income for base of the pyramid women and men in both rural and urban areas.
- Sustainably scale innovators’ solutions to meet the challenges in the WE4F nexus.
- Promote climate and environmental resilience and biodiversity through the sustainable, holistic management of natural resources and ecosystems.
A description of the opportunity:
High Atlas Foundation (HAF) is a leading company in developing a WEF accounting system in Morocco and MENA to evaluate current Water, Energy and Food (WEF) sustainability and predict responses to climate and resource changes. With community partners, HAF also grows trees in nurseries at a subsidized rate for farmers, cooperatives, associations, and education centers. HAF’s tree monitoring system secures voluntary and credited carbon offsets, integrating and maximizing the benefits from remote sensing and ground-truthing with community engagement. This system can be applied on an individual life zone basis to estimate thresholds when tree planting, production and carbon sequestration have exceeded WEF conditions and require major adjustments.
HAF has an extensive database on tree survival, growth, product yield and carbon sequestration from nurseries and projects in several life zones that, combined with published studies, can develop trends in agriculture products and carbon sequestration by life zone as a function of WEF conditions, such knowledge allows the firm to develop WEF accounting system with high quality. In addition, HAF provides consultancy and capacity-building workshops to achieve value-added processing of agricultural products from the growing communities and their cooperatives.
HAF, with funding from the WE4F, has developed a Morocco-specific algorithm to measure carbon sequestration on which the service provider will build upon (N.B.: the algorithm requires further testing and validation). HAF has previously successfully sold carbon credits to major international institutions. As part of its growth plan, HAF is seeking to build its data management infrastructure as well as a system to expand its carbon credits as a source of revenue and measure the performance of its trees.
