Duties and Responsibilities

You will be assisting in the delivery of the ‘Young Mediterranean Voices’ programme to young people aged 15 to 35 in schools, universities and youth organisations across the Middle East and North Africa (particularly in your country of residence).

In doing so it is expected that you will:

• Deliver YMV trainings to an exceptionally high standard, meeting the YMV quality requirements.
• Commit to an initial development period of three days which will include an intensive training in the YMV Debate Curriculum and Facilitation Techniques and additional home/online learning.
• Effectively engage debaters with a delivery style that is clear, concise, energetic and relevant.
• Follow YMV processes and procedures regarding the sending back of monitoring and evaluation questionnaires to the Country Manager and Hub Lead.
• Commit to updating your subject knowledge base and continuing your professional development across the 12 months and further to 2020.
• Become a part of the wider YMV team, actively participating in the ‘National Advisory Committee’ and sharing good practice.
• Become a representative of YMV, upholding YMV mission, ethos and reputation.

Person Specification

We are looking for energetic and engaging individuals with a genuine interest in social change, skills-building, education and the empowerment of young people.

You SHOULD:

• Have a unique and creative style of delivery, and the ability to engage young people, taking them on a memorable learning journey. Ability to think on your feet and embrace new ideas.
• Have a minimum of two years’ experience (inclusive of voluntary) delivering participatory learning/training programmes to young people. Ideally you will have worked with different types of young people, varying in group size, age, background, ability and setting.
• Be educated to degree level, be a qualified teacher, or have an equivalent level of professional experience.
• Ideally have experience of delivering British Parliamentary Debate, as well as having a broad understanding of the culture of debate.
• Be confident in delivering programmes to young people you’re meeting for the first time. This requires a strong presence, the ability to forge relationships quickly and effectively, and the confidence to use a variety of teaching techniques (e.g. drama, visuals, and games).
• Have experience in content writing, creating ‘How to Guides’, curriculum management, workshop planning.
• Have a ‘working’ command of English and/or Arabic/French.
• Under 35 years old (on date of application)

About being a YMV Trainer

The amount of voluntary work you are offered is dependent on your flexibility, depth of expertise and a level of seasonality with the academic calendar. A booking typically is for a weekend but could occasionally last longer.

You will be provided with comprehensive training to deliver the YMV programme:

• Programme observation
• Core subject knowledge; e-learning programme followed by assessment
• Programme delivery training
• Supported programme delivery with the existing YMV team
• Programme delivery observed by YMV

Offering the highest quality of delivery is key to achieving our mission. Therefore your work as a voluntary trainer for Young Mediterranean Voices is dependent upon passing this training process, as well as continuing to meet our quality standards in your programme delivery. We assess this through young people and programme manager feedback, as well as observation of your programme delivery.

About Young Mediterranean Voices (YMV)

Young Mediterranean Voices is primed to become the central flagship regional youth network connecting civil society, education institutions and policy-makers across Europe and the Neighbourhood South (Southern Mediterranean and Europe).

Building on more than five years investment in the field, as well as established networks, pioneering methodologies and independent research, the overall objective of Young Mediterranean Voices programme is to: “Empower young people to enhance a culture of dialogue, to contribute to public policy and shape media discourses, and to create a shared understanding with peers across the Mediterranean on how to address issues of common concern to their communities.”

To achieve this, the partners will focus on four specific objectives (a) a cadre of young influencers with enhanced skills for dialogue and debate will be created ; (b) debating practices will be embedded in education institutions and CSOs; (c) platforms and mechanisms for young influencers will be enhanced to shape public policy, influence decision-makers and shape media narratives; (d) exposure among young debaters for shared understanding and capacity will be enhanced to develop shared responses with peers to socio-cultural challenges.

This programme will bring the experience of Arab youth-led debate to other parts of the Euro-Mediterranean region. The programme will provide opportunities to open doors for young influencers to shape policy and media narratives. One of the most pioneering aspects of this programme is to contribute to enhance the “Euro-Med dialogue” paradigm by bringing the experience of a pan-Arab programme to the North and consequently challenging the traditional cooperation dynamics that were dominated by programming towards the South.
