Overview

CARE International in Lebanon (CIL) is looking for a Volunteer to work as a “Field Assistant Intern, for the AFD Funded BASATINE Consortium Programme. 

BASATINE Overview  

With support of L’Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the Bolstering Agriculture Systems’ Ability to Invest, Nourish, and Employ (BASATINE) programme is a 4-year Consortium of six local and International NGOs with vast experience in agriculture and market systems development. These NGOs include CARE (as lead), Mercy Corps (MC), Berytech Foundation, Georges N. Frem Foundation (GNFF), Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST) and Al Majmoua. BASATINE aims to support farmers and other value chain and associated sector actors in areas of Beqaa and Akkar focused on the production of cereals, legumes and vegetables, seeking a territorial approach, and promoting linkages with other value chains. Through complementary interventions designed in alignment with the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, the project will immediately address food insecurity and provide needed income and technical support to farmers to survive the current economic crisis as well as improve the capacity of food systems to maintain employment and growth in the longer term via stronger domestic production and system linkages. This will ultimately contribute to greater economic stability – particularly for women, improved rural development, and more positive social cohesion between host/refugee communities at a local level.

Overall Objective of BASATINE

To help sustain the capacity of the Lebanese agriculture to produce food for the local market and create and maintain jobs, to contribute to the prevention of tensions between host communities and refugees

Specific Objectives:

  1. Value chain actors recover their livelihoods affected by the socio-economic and financial crisis
  2. Farmers improve their access to livelihoods, through Sustainable, Productive, Equitable and Resilient (SuPER) Food Systems
  3. Agriculture sector actors engage in improved market activities, resources, and trade relationships
  4. Agriculture and related sector actors increase investments through tailored and inclusive financial services and products
  5. Agriculture sector stakeholders utilize high quality, reliable evidence to promote evidence-based sector development

Expected Results:

BASATINE will support 6,000 farms, reaching 12,000 male and female adult farmers, 10,000 host and refugee seasonal farm workers, 400 public extension officers and vocational students, 20 input supply/distributor SMEs, 156 agri-food processor micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and over 30 agri-sector key stakeholders (including development actors, donors, local and national government). Overall, the project will maintain/improve over 19,000 jobs and create 700 jobs for male and female value chain actors. Overall, the project will generate the following results:

  • Farmers have an increased volume of farm sales by the end of the project
  • Female actors in the agri-sector have improved access, control, or ownership of agricultural productive resources, assets and services

Targeted farms and MSMEs (female/youth-led and owned) have maintained, improved, or increased employment levels including for females, youths and PWD's.

Objectives of this Internship is to support the implementing team in activities related to; training, logistics, e-voucher distribution, data collection, follow up and monitoring of activities implemented.

3. Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Project Implementation and monitoring (70%)

  • Support with preparing, Planning and Assisting in the day-to-day operations and implementation of the project’s activities.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to beneficiaries about services available.
  • Identify needs of beneficiaries and refer them following CARE’s referral mechanism.
  • Attend eventual trainings provided by CARE.
  • Monitor and report back social trends, field situations and any incident.
  • He/she can be asked required to perform other related duties as identified by the supervisor.
  • Conduct phone survey whenever needed.
  • Track referrals through collecting, tracking, and following up on beneficiary feedback using the referral tools and database.
  • Conduct field monitoring visits to the implementation areas (Monitor e-voucher. implementation at input supplier’s premises and make sure that the distribution modality is going as planned, Attend beneficiaries’ trainings and schedule field visits, to monitor the implementation of activities and beneficiaries’ engagement). 

Reporting (30%)

  • Ensures efficient data transmission and archives for future reference.
  • Clean the data collected and share it with the Project Officer for reporting purposes.
  • Report to the Project Officer and the MEAL unit if any issues faced.
  • Report success stories, feedbacks, and complaints from farmers/ suppliers to BASATINE team.
  • Participate in internal BASATINE team meetings.

4. Qualifications / special skills or knowledge

a. Skills & knowledge:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft office applications and tech-related tools (tablet, smart phone...)
  • Familiarity with M&E tools
  • Extensive knowledge in humanitarian principles and humanitarian processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with affected communities.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to gender and diversity; experience and ability to live and work in diverse cultural contexts in a culturally appropriate manner; and capacity to make accurate self-assessment particularly in high security contexts.
  • Preferably trained on prevention of sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse (PSEA).
  • Motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative and international environment.
  • Mobilized and ability to work independently as well as an effective team player.
  • Very good writing and reporting skills.
  • Very good communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence and can-do attitude; ability to advance projects with minimal supervision.

b. Experience:

Experience in field assistance and monitoring under humanitarian projects - desired

c. Academic background: 

University graduate or undergraduate “3rd year” in Agriculture or Livelihood related disciplines

  1. Languages: English and/ or Arabic are the working language of CARE International.
  1. of other languages is an asset.

5. Other contract elements

CARE offers internship and volunteer opportunities for up to 4 months contract for an allowance at USD $25 for meals and transportation and for a limit of 16 days a month.
