R&D - Small Ruminants Dentition Consultant

Amongst CARE International’s key imperatives in our mission is putting people it serves first through implementing cutting edge programming in areas it operates. CARE International in Lebanon (CIL), has been mainly responding to the Syria crisis, but now shifting to a new strategic direction. At this stage it is of the utmost importance that we start exploring more effective business models, but also organizational structures that would support our programmatic operations to deliver services to those in need.

CARE International presence in Lebanon stems from 2006, and recently it has been relaunched in 2013 to support Syrian refugees that were displaced in Lebanon from crisis. Over the course of 7 years, it has supported over half a million beneficiaries by providing protection, livelihoods, and through humanitarian programming such as shelter, WASH, and the distribution of food and non-food items.

Currently, CARE International presence is consolidated in the North, and Mount Lebanon. We also have a smaller presence in Tyre, South Lebanon as part of the WASH EC funded Consortium. The main program sectors that CARE Lebanon is working in are; Protection with particular emphasizes on Gender, Economic Empowerment and Humanitarian Response.

CARE Lebanon has scaled up rapidly over the past few years and today it has just about 70 staff members, with about 15 different local/international organization partners. 90% of the team is composed of national staff with a symbolic number of international members.

Objectives

CARE International in Lebanon (CIL) is seeking a consultant with an extensive experience in Small Ruminants (SR) nutrition and feed science to conduct a research and provide advisory services on SR digestive accessory. Its purpose is to assist farmers and shepherds in sustaining their farming business operations by providing reliable analysis, supporting the development of innovative productivity-enhancing tools and accessories and ensuring output efficiency.

The aim of this research and development (R&D) is to achieve a unique, creative, sustainable and marketable SR digestive accessory.

Scope of Work

The SR Dentition Consultant will be primarily responsible of the following activities:

  • Develop and implement innovative digestive accessory that would be convenient in extensive and intensive systems
  • Lead on the research (development, testing, evaluating performance, etc. of the new accessory)
  • Provide AFDAL II partners as well as trainers with all related manufacturing and application techniques through a ToT
  • Provide technical support for AFDAL II partners as well as trainers as and when requested
  • Develop and submit reports as and when required
  • Contribute to research evaluation or exposition of results organized under the auspices of CIL. Assessment of the scientific and economic significance of the R&D’s results is included in this type of evaluation.
  • Cooperate with CARE for an appropriate publication of the R&D work results
  • Relocate or face a longer commute as and when required

The payment will be issued on deliverables after receiving the good received note from the Line Manager regardless the number of days worked. Noting that the consultant is required to respond to any request for modification or additional information for a period of 2 months after the finalization of the deliverables (sending the first draft).

The consultant and CARE shall cooperate in appropriate publication of the results of research and development work performed pursuant to this Agreement. If the research yields publishable information, the researcher reserves the right to publish the results of the research in international journals, with due regard to the protection of CIL’s confidential information. Researcher will submit the manuscript of any proposed publication to CIL at least 60 days before publication, and CIL shall have the right to review and comment upon the article in order to protect CIL’s confidential information. The determination of authorship for any paper shall be in accordance with accepted scientific practice.

R&D results are subject to the predominating interest to obtain patent protection from the Lebanese Ministry of Economy and Trade for any subject matter deemed patentable.  For that end, and in order to avoid loss of patent rights as a result of premature public disclosure of patentable information, and upon partners mutual consent, publication will be delayed to enable parties to secure adequate protection of intellectual property that would be affected by said publication and to permit the preparation and filing of a patent application on the subject matter to be disclosed. A representative (to be identified) will proceed to file a patent application in due course.

Researcher is required to contribute at no charge to research evaluation or exposition of results organized under the auspices of CIL. Assessment of the scientific and economic significance of the R&D’s results is included in this type of evaluation.

Consultant Profile

  • At least   5-10  years of relevant experience, especially at NGOs, academic organizations, standard-setting bodies, public agencies focused on SR Nutrition and research development.
  • Master’s degree in one or several of the following areas: Agriculture Engineering – Feed Science – Veterinary medicine (PhD holders are encouraged to apply)

  • High familiarity working in the Lebanese context
  • Extensive experience working and interacting with shepherds
  • Extensive experience interacting with and relating to gender professionals and international stakeholders at senior level.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong internal relationships and networks.
  • Motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative and international environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic and English languages
  • Excellent reporting skills
  • Computer skills: full command of Microsoft applications (word, excel, PowerPoint) and common internet applications
