The project entitled “From Education to Employment? Trajectories in the Context of Protracted Displacement for Young People in Lebanon” (the “Project”) is in collaboration between the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) at Oxford Brookes University and the following parties: Centre for Lebanese Studies at the Lebanese American University, Lil Madina in Saida and Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts/ AL-JANA Center in Beirut, and seeks to analyze the trajectories from education to employment of young Palestinian refugees, young Syrian refugees and young Lebanese nationals in two regions of Lebanon: Beirut and Saida. The Post-doc is also responsible for overseeing the IDRC funded project “From Education to Employment: Youth Trajectories in Jordan and Lebanon in the Context of Protracted Displacement” and oversee the team in Jordan.

 

The recently awarded project by the Economic and Social Research Council with the Global Challenges Fund (GCRF) with the title “From education-to-employment? Trajectories in the context of protracted displacement for young people in Lebanon” as well as the IDRC funded project “From Education to Employment: Youth Trajectories in Jordan and Lebanon in the Context of Protracted Displacement” is seeking to appoint a full time postdoctoral researcher for 18 months, beginning on the October 1, 2019.

 

The project is a collaboration between the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) at Oxford Brookes University and the Centre for Lebanese Studies at the Lebanese American University and seeks to analyse the trajectories from education to employment of young Palestinian refugees, young Syrian refugees and young Lebanese nationals in Lebanon and Jordan. From this material the aim is to respond to the question: In displacement settings, what shapes the trajectories of young people from education into employment?

 

The project will gather a large qualitative and quantitative dataset and work with participatory methods to analyse data and artistic means of disseminating findings among young people themselves. The post holder will contribute to all stages of the project with principal engagement in project management, data collection, and analysis. The project adopts a collaborative writing strategy and it is expected that the postdoctoral researcher will be an active participant in publishing activities.

 

The post is based at Centre for Lebanese and the researcher is expected to contribute to the day-to-day activities at the Centre. Additionally, ethnographic fieldwork in Lebanon will be required.

 

Main job tasks and responsibilities:

  • Overall data management including administering transcribing data and data analysis in close collaboration with the research assistants at the Centre for Lebanese Studies
  • Full project management (finance, communication, administrative, etc.) in Lebanon and Jordan.
  • Manage relationships with community partner(s)
  • Planning and coordinating the Project in close collaboration with the PIs and co-PIs
  • Support fieldwork and data collection where necessary
  • Contribute to ongoing literature review
  • Assist with the preparation of papers for publications and make presentations at meetings and/or conferences
  • Help to establish and run an archive of narratives in Radar including a photo library
  • Work on outreach activities, participate and help to organize international workshops and seminars
  • Assist in other projects related to the Centre for Lebanese Studies if requested including proposal writing.

 

The Post-Doc Researcher will report on the above activities to your line manager and support all CLS team members.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Phd in Development and Emergency Practice, Social Sciences or cognate disciplines
  • Minimum 4-6 years of relative experience
  • Research experience in forced migration, education or employment
  • Research experience in qualitative methodology and data management
  • Experience in using software for analysing qualitative data
  • Proof of good writing skills and publications
  • Experience with presenting research results
  • Proficiency in the English and Arabic languages
  • Creativity and ability to contribute ideas to the project
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
