Project Driver and Expeditor - ARE Activity

BACKGROUND

The Lebanon Agriculture and Rural Empowerment (ARE) program is a multi-year project funded by USAID to develop rural economics in Lebanon through support to the agro-food sector and other industries to unlock local and export sales potential while also creating jobs and increasing farmers’ and worker’s incomes. ARE will increase jobs; improve incomes; improve female participation and employment opportunities; increase domestic and export sales; increase private sector investment; improve access to finance; link value chain actors to domestic and international markets; and improve farm production through improved practices, technology, increased volume, and/or decreased cost.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The driver is responsible for driving and maintain the project vehicles. The driver will work in the administrative department and reports to the Admin and HR Assistant who shall be responsible for coordinating his/her assignments and supervising his/her work. The driver is also responsible for serving as an expeditor to facilitate all administrative transactions with governmental and other institutions as requested by the project.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES

Drives project vehicles daily as assigned and/or pre-approved by supervisor, including routing shuttle service runs, scheduled field trips, project-related transportation within Beirut and other cities, and other driving assignment as required

Cleans assigned vehicles daily both inside and outside

Checks assigned vehicles daily to ensure that they are operational and safe to drive, including oil, radiator, fan belt, brake fluid, wipers, tires, lights, and signals

Responsible for the safekeeping of all vehicle equipment, tools, first aid kits, spares etc.

Adhere to all safety and communication protocols as advised by Chemonics and supervisor;

Ensures passenger safety by obeying traffic laws and driving carefully;

Initiates and supervises any repairs required on assigned vehicles with supervisor’s approval;

Initiates and supervises routine periodic maintenance of assigned project vehicles, including oil and filter changes, tune-ups, and professional cleaning by high-pressure hose based on the manufacturer’s instructions on optimum maintenance requirements

Fulfills project reporting requirements and maintains records on vehicle routing, vehicle fuel consumption, vehicle condition, etc. and ensuring proper supporting documentation.

Expedites any project request necessary to facilitate the running of the office

Carries out certain procedures for clearing project commodities for customs

Handles passport-related matters for the short-term consultants upon their arrival in Lebanon

Work night shifts whenever required for airport pick-ups;

Supports project’s logistics need as assigned by supervisor;

Assists with answering phones when needed;

Conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and Chemonics’ policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.

Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by the Chief of Party;

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A high school degree / baccalaureate required

Minimum of two years of experience in public driving within different regions in Lebanon

Valid public driving license and experience driving 4X4

Driving experience for international donors and international organizations and knowledge of USAID’s rules and regulations for driving preferred

Experience working across Lebanon, particularly in the North, South, and Bekaa regions preferred

Basic spoken and written Arabic and English required

 

LOCATION OF ASSIGNMENT

The driver and expeditor will be based in ARE’s main office in Beirut, with regional travel as needed.

REPORTING

The driver will report to the Admin and HR Assistant.
