Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental international humanitarian organization, and was founded in 1968. Concern Worldwide currently operates in a number of countries across the globe, with its Head Office in Dublin. We work with the poor and vulnerable in the world’s poorest countries to help them bring about long-lasting change in their lives and realize their fundamental human rights; to food, to health, to education, and ultimately to a life of dignity. Together with local and international partners, and with the beneficiaries themselves, we respond to emergencies and undertake long term development work. We work across the world to promote a better understanding of extreme poverty, and we campaign for local and global action that will help reduce this.
The North governorate is characterized by high levels of poverty which pre- existed the Syrian crisis and comparatively weak public services. The governorate is hosting significant numbers of registered and unregistered Syrian Refugees, Palestinian Refugees and Lebanese nationals who have returned from Syria. According to the most recent UNHCR profile in September 2015, North Governorate had an estimated population of 788,000 people including approximately 176, 000 (22%) registered Syrian refugees. Updated figures of registered Syrian Refugees for March 2016 indicate a decrease in the number of registered Syrian Refugees to 156,448. An estimated 25% of the Lebanese host community is living below the national poverty line. This huge influx has put extreme pressure on already weak infrastructure and flooded the labour market, creating severe completion for work. In 2014, International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that both Lebanese and refugee communities in North Governorate identified employment as their most critical need and demonstrated that employment was harder to find for refugees, taking an average of 118 days to find work in Tripoli, as opposed to 64 days in the Bekaa and 30 days in the South of Lebanon. Workers were also found to have the lowest average monthly salaries and the longest average working hours per week.
Responding to the need of area, Concern has partnered with Basmeh and Zeitooneh, under the funding of The Big Heart Foundation to provide embroidery skills training, business skills training and women’s empowerment training for 220 vulnerable, Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese women.
