Background
Concern Worldwide is an Irish International NGO working in the world’s poorest countries. With funding from the World Food Programme (WFP), the Lebanon Branch of Concern Worldwide is implementing a project in Akkar entitled “Sustainably improve the resilience of individuals, households, communities, and systems suffering during the financial and economic crisis through the vegetable value chain in Akkar, Lebanon”. The Project includes in-kind support for 60 farmers, including 15 in Kanyse, 30 in Samouniyeh, and 15 in Arqa, through the rehabilitation of 2 of each farmer’s greenhouses. Concern will also build the capacity of the farmers on pest control and prevention in their greenhouses, including women empowerment in the agricultural sector, building on their traditional role in seeding, harvesting, post-harvesting, and food processing.
Scope of work
The Consultant will train 60 farmers, and identify the greenhouse rehabilitation support needs for 2 greenhouses per farmer, which may include greenhouse nylon, nets, mulch, double doors, ventilation, drip irrigation system, cranks etc. The goal of this work is to improve the physical conditions of 2 greenhouses per farmer, and pest control, towards increased production and enhanced product quality. Concern seeks an experienced qualified Consult to provide the following services:
- Field visit to 60 farmers, including 15 in Knayse, 15 in Arqa, and 30 in Sammouniyeh to assess the state of their greenhouses, and identify 2 for rehabilitation support
- Prepare a detailed BoQ per greenhouse per farmer that lists in details (with clear specifications) the rehabilitation needs for each greenhouse needed for the rehabilitation within the threshold that Concern determines per farmer
- Ensure regular coordination with Concern for agreed a clear schedule and work plan
Reporting lines
The consultant will report to Concern Livelihoods Project Manager and will liaise closely with the Agriculture Specialist and the Agriculture Officers.
Timeframe
This consultancy will be for two months, from the day the contract is signed.
Deliverables and outputs of the Consultancy
- Adapted plan of work for the 2 months consultancy period, as per scope of work
- Assessment of greenhouses of 60 farmers, selected by Concern, in Knayse, Arqa and Sammouniyeh
- List of 120 greenhouses for rehabilitation, with associated BOQs for each one, for Concern to procure
- Training sessions for 60 farmers, in groups
- Training report
- Supervision of the greenhouse rehabilitation, as carried out by farmers and cash for work casual labourers identified by Concern
Requirements and qualifications
- A degree in Agricultural engineering / Agricultural sciences (Master’s degree is advantage)
- At least five years’ experience in vegetable production including greenhouse experience
- Knowledge of agricultural practices in pest control and prevention in the vegetables value chain
- Proficiency in Microsoft office especially Excel
- Experience in dealing with small scale Lebanese farmers, in poor communities
- Humanitarian motivation and experience
- Excellent communication skills
