Yemen Agrometeorological Update: Food Security and Early Warning Information System (01 - 31 March 2025)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Precipitation Trends: The country largely remained dry, aligning with the typical monsoon pattern. Ground stations recorded minimal rainfall mainly around elevated areas.
  • Rainfall Anomalies: Wetter conditions were noted along the Red Sea coast and in Socotra, while significant rainfall deficits impacted the eastern and southern highlands, as well as coastal regions along the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea.
  • Temperature Patterns: Yemen has been experiencing a gradual rise in temperatures, with daytime highs between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius. Highland areas face cold stress risks as nighttime temperatures fall below 5 degrees Celsius.
  • Vegetation Performance: In March 2025, vegetation health across Yemen varied. Eastern and coastal regions faced moisture deficits, whereas some parts of the west and highlands showed modest improvement. Dhamar governorate experienced localized water stress due to ongoing rainfall shortages and limited irrigation.
  • Impacts on Agricultural Livelihoods and Food Security: There is an increased risk of reduced crop and livestock yields for the upcoming season. This is exacerbated by Yemen's heavy reliance on imports, rising food prices, and deteriorating food security
